I don’t see many people my age in the workforce these days. Even the doordasher/Uber drivers/ instacart all seem to be middle aged. So I’m wondering how people are getting by. Then it hit me: the recent mental health trend. You can get like 3,000 a month for mental health disabilities as long as you go to treatment. So is that why people are claiming to have anxiety, depression, etc cause they tired of the rat race

i don't have a disability but over the years i've read comments and heard peoples experiences for applying for disability aid, the majority of them say it takes a long time. sometimes years to be approved for disability payments.

Hmmm... $3000 does sound about right but that's the total package of housing, food stamps, and an $1000 for miscellaneous things. I know a schizophrenic person with a daughter and that's pretty much her package. Mind you she legit can't work and can't have a bank account.

Anecdotally I have a homie that's running this hustle. I doubt it's widespread like that, you typically don't get enough to really live off and you can't work over a certain amount or they cut it. He's supplementing with a chick he's living with.

Desperate/hopeless people go that route because they can’t imagine themselves beyond a shytty job. There is no way I’d cap my income just cause I have depression.

Now there are people that legit are crippled by their mental illness, so I understand that.

Sounds like a shytty way to live. A while back I worked with a dude who didn’t want to work too many hours, so he wouldn’t lose his SSI benefits. He said he had to see a psychologist once a month and someone had to come by to give him a shot, every other week...

SSDI alone isn't usually enough to live on if you have a mortgage, especially if you're single. It may not be enough to rent an apartment either, especially with the rising rent. Anyway, the people I know who are on it, really do qualify. So it's not a hustle for the most part, especially if you're Black.

A good thing about collecting disabilty is, if you don't have a house, or an apartment, you can always get a room, or share an apartment. In other words, it's hard to wound up on the streets.

When I was in a halfway house around 2007, that was the hustle for everyone. Not me, I got a job at the place, but all the guys just claimed disability because of a drunk/alcohol addiction and got a check.

Most Black men I know who got disabily because of addiction were military, mostly for alcohol. I think it's easier for civilians to get disability for depression, and even easier if you're military.

Coming up on the block with almost all the brothers dealing with some type of drug addiction, I never saw one get disability for it. Not during my working years. Prison or jail, maybe. I remember a few of them tried to say I had an addiction too, because I drunk beer with them

Getting over on disability is too hard to be widespread...

Some people do get over on it...

but the vast majority of people who even attempt to scam it, let alone get it when they deserve it...

end up fighting for years or getting their claim rejected
