To answer your question yes it's incredibly fun, the best fps campaign since halo reach. You should install the updates, I played it on my cousins system when his internet was down, had a ton of screen tearing and some fps drops.

The updates are really excessive though it's like 100gigs after they all install

It's excellent. The action is fast paced but there's also a ton of secrets to find so you're rewarded if you take your time to explore the levels as well. There's plenty of mods and upgrades as well that you get to install as you want.
Only on the 3rd mission so far but I love it.

I'm trying to play through it now (3rd attempt)

it just gets kinda samey how it's like a series of these arena-style combat instances. I guess I just prefer the style of a traditional corridor shooter

Are there other games where you're blasting demons on Mars and carving them up with a chainsaw?
There's been a lot of changes but that's to be expected as the last Doom game was released over 10 years ago and that was Doom 3 which was pretty different from the prior titles itself as it more of a horror game with the flashlight mechanic.
I dunno, it feels right to me. I also think the new melee kills that people were so critical of prior to launch fit right in and actually make the game faster. Now you can get health any time you're in the heat of battle without having to run off a find a health pack. So, no breaks in the action to go heal. Glory kills have saved me basically any time a Hell Knight pops up out of nowhere and takes half my fukking health with one hit
