Like he said nah, you don't need to know anything. The story is kinda self explanatory and you get interrogated at the start of the game. The answers you give are your back story if you haven't played the first two games.

Its the 2015 GOTY. $25 is an absolute steal.
However, I disagree with the others about the first two being skippable. Playing 2 helps you understand this game a LOT, and its backwards compatible on the XB1. Definitely play it if possible.

Breh i bought Witcher 3 and tried to get into 2 times but just couldn't
About 2-3 weeks ago i finally gave it another chance and holy shyt
Totally worth it breh. Combat is trash and not rewarding so turning down the down the difficulty is fine. The story, the world, the voice acting, the depth of lore and the heart poured into this game is just 
It is slow and kind of hard to get into if you work a lot etc. but once you start really traveling the world and seeing the depth of this game its straight piff
