Is there a definitive guide on how to work while overseas and still appear like you're in the USA?

I know people say use VPNs, but is any of them much better than the other? I assume that when you're in a country in the developing world, that when the lights go out, it's going to knock out the VPN. If you forget to re-connect, then you're kind of screwed. Your company will notice that you're not actually in the USA. Do these VPN companies allow you to make it look like you're working from the same exact IP address every day, or will you just be given a random IP address each time that just so happens to be in the USA?

@Wiseborn @CashmereThoughts I know that y'all are amongst the Coli travel-fam. Would you happen to have answers to these elementary questions I'm asking?

I don't think anyone cares what country you're in as long as you're getting the work done and paying your taxes, both of which a VPN has nothing to do with.

If you in a place with iffy internet then when the power goes out the internet goes with it. You can get a cheap solar generator that will power the computer and the Router so you'd be fine.

A VPN will hide your location as a far as I know that's all it does. If you're overseas and your boss doesn't want you to be They'll find out.

My image of generators are these big clunky pieces of metal. I'll head to YouTube and look for reviews on Solar generators, but are there any that you specifically have seen in action, and actually would recommend?

I'd get a jackery, Figure out how much power you will need and for long? Really alll you need is a fan and a lamp and internet and you'd be fine, Most modern refrigerators could go without power for 16 hours shyt is like having a cooler

This would be way more than you need this is for some kind of extended blackout and you wanted to power a sopsiticated communitions system.

Are you thinking about working remotely full time? How far are you in the thought process?

Appreciate the suggestion on the generator...I don't have a remote job now, but it's always something in the back of my mind. I got family in DR, Colombia, Mexico, and a few other places...My sister is in DR right now, and while the lights haven't gone out that much, they did go out at least twice last week and on one of those days it lasted about 8 hours (this was in Santo Domingo in the Zona Colonial area).

Edit: Just checked your link. That might be more than I need right now especially considering the price, but the way you name-dropped them so fast has me thinking that they're among the best of the best.

They are, technically if you could do work on your phone you could get away with a RAV Power solar charger that it's about the size of a really thick Iphone.

Secure the job first but If I were you based on the countries listed I'd pick Colombia. but you could go with the DR since you have strong family ties there but yeah no electricity on a hot day and in Zona Colonial is unacceptable.

Good to keep in mind. I would probably use my basic laptop, but I guess a lot of things can be done just on a mobile phone nowadays.

I have strong family ties in Colombia too. If I didn't have strong family ties in some of these places, plus the fact that I speak Spanish fluently, people would be looking at me crazy (especially if I said that I was going to visit some place like Medellin or Sosua). The word got out too much. It's the same as me saying that I'm going to visit some place like Thailand. At least when I say that I'm going to visit Chiang Mai it's not too much of a red flag, but if I say that I'm going to Bangkok or Pattaya (the latter which I've yet to travel to), people are going to judge more harshly. It is what it is though.

I know people say This is the internet but this is the internet. I never heard Sosua come up in conversation and I know a lot of Dominicans in New York

Bring up Medellin and everyone thinks of Pablo not p*ssy.

No one would look funny at a Chick going to Jamaica or Rome either.

All public IP addresses are assigned to regional internet registries, who in turn auction them to organizations in those regions. It's public record of who owns which IP address. And that includes knowing which part of a country an IP address is allocated. ISPs have a known-block of addresses they assign to customers in a state or region.

Client-side VPNs can be installed on your device. They wouldn't be affected by power outages. The software could fail and cause that tunnel to go with it. But they work well.

Spoiler, I'm not in Italy. But Google doesn't know that.

If you work with certain data, be aware that you could be breaking the law by accessing the data in a different country.
Yep. Companies have conditional access rules that block accessing data from outside of the US. And they probably sensors in place that will trigger internal alerts when a foreign IP address is used to try to access something. It's initially going to be viewed as malicious, which makes it more high profile with security officers being aware.

People are already bracing for Russia to retaliate in the cyber space due to sanctions. And with Nancy Pelosi triggering China, preemptive security monitoring is about increase.

VPN is the most common, but you can change your proxies, which is more difficult to do and for advanced users. If you knew about proxies you would not have asked this question here, so it's best to go with VPN.

Here is some additional information:
