To be fair, folks was doing that long before crack became a thing. Crack did provide an entirely new incentive to do it though.

My job hired a crackhead once, he got fired after he was caught stealing an expired credit card and a bungee cord 
My neighbor got his stolen right out of an apartment parking lot. Says he woke up to hear grinding, and once he got outside it was gone
It’s huge out here in San Diego. There are a lot of places you could offload a catalytic converter with no problem.

They’re stealing everything. I can’t even tell you how many air conditioning units and rooftop units have been stolen around here recently.
