As reported by HipHopDX in 2001, Jay apologized shortly after the latter song dropped because his mother wasn't happy with what he said on the record. "Mom put in a call and said, ‘That went too far,'" Jay said in an appearance on Hot 97. "She’s never, ever called me about music. So I was like ‘Okay, okay, okay. I’ll go shut it down.'"

Around 19:30 is when Nas and Jungle debate whether to respect/accept the apology. Nas did. Jungle didn't

Jungle: nah I don't respect it. Even if she tell you to apologize, you don't admit that
maybe Cole mama told him to apologize and he just ain't admitting it like Jungle said cause he don't wanna let Jungle down.
He said it on Hot 97 the day he lost the battle, there was an entire interview with Jay just sounding defeated and talking about the battle and his history with Nas.

I was listening to that live on air..he was practically crying and in tears.
Nas really hit a sensitive nerve..he had figured out Jay's nature and knew exactly where to strike to inflict the most pain.
