They grow up in the same neighborhood seeing the same people over years. Their rivals are people who are directly or indirectly responsible for violence against people they know.

The biggest difference is the average italian who lives in a mobbed up neighborhood in Brooklyn doesn't have to worry about being robbed by some mobster, generally speaking. The average Chinese person in Queens doesn't have to worry about being killed by a triads member because they "looked at them wrong", generally speaking. The average black person living in a crip, blood, gd etc neighborhood has to keep their head on a swivel 24/7 so they aren't robbed and killed by some gang member because they walked down "their block" which "disrespects them".
