Had 2 frieds that had ESL jobs there. From their experience, they don't hate blacks, but there aren't a lot so you might get viewed as a bit of a novelty until you fall in a circle. Japan is one of the most homogeneous nations out there.

Are the Japanese really racist? I'd rather deal with xenophobia than outright racism (i.e.: police pulling you over for no reason, waiters spitting in your food, people yelling '******' in the streets). Collective xenophobia isn't much of a problem since there are some people in the group that are open-minded enough to hang out with you and be friends with. Seriously fukking hate the US though. You can't walk down the street without a cop demanding to see your ID. I want to live in freedom.

Japan is xenophobic. 99.9% of the population is Japanese. Most people in Japan haven't even seen a black or white person. Don't let people trick you into believing that Japan loves white people and that white people are common over there. White people like all tourists are in tourist towns and don't even see 10% of the country. You also have to deal with devils who have spread rumors about us and have been doing so for 100's of years. So you will be stereotyped out of ignorance more so than hatred.
