western governments....
not western culturally....
and western means current "western" culture...
America is a western country...
but western american culture in 1950 is not the same western american culture in 2024
I understand what you're coming from but Brazil and the Dominican Republic and Latin America as a whole is a part of the Western world as they literally fit the basic criteria as Western countries.
The majority of the population practice Christianity- a Western religion.
They were colonized by European countries who descend from Greco-Roman civilization- Spain and Portugal
The DR speaks Spanish and Brazil speaks Portugese- European languages.
They follow the Gregorian calendar
Nearly everyone in those countries are either majority or of at least partial European descent
They follow Roman law- a European legal system
The architecture is based on European architecture
Their governments are based on European political ideologies i.e. democracy and communism
They study European writers, philosophers, and historical figures at school
They dress in Western clothing
They are all in intents and purposes, Western countries. Countries don't need to be rich or powerful or even be 100% white to qualify as Western. The United States is not 40% POC and has indigenous, African, and Asian cultural influences yet still considered Western. Nor they have to follow a fast/hustle/ultra-progressive culture nor follow newer ideas on feminism and family values to be Western. Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Romania are none of that yet they are still considered Western. And a Western nation's culture remains Western whether values change over time. America, the UK, Brazil, Cuba, was Western in 1824 and still is Western in 2024.
