"Item 1. Player Going to the Ground.

A player is considered to be going to the ground if he does not remain upright long enough to demonstrate that he is clearly a runner. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete."

nothing to discuss here. stupid rule, but a right call. /thread

His initial contact with the ground was the knee.
And the stretch was part of that same motion. Initial contact with the ground refers to the entire process. If I fall on my butt and then the ball comes loose that is not a catch.
When Calvin Johnson bobbled it he lost the ball completely and it rolled out of the endzone.

James bobbled it but still has possession and it never touches the ground after the bobble.

How is that the same?
Jones pretty clearly does retain possession.

The problem is the rule(s)

Too many different interpretations for what is a catch/not a catch/when a receiver becomes a runner,etc

I thought it was a catch but due to the NFL's rules within rules within rules it wasn't deemed so. I think whoever said it was the correct interpretation of a stupid rule had it right

I hate the Steelers with all my heart.

That said, it looked like a catch and TD to me. As far as I'm concerned, the play should have ended when he broke the plane.

Common sense says it's a catch.

BY RULE, it is not a catch.

No it isnt..the ball hit the ground which caused it to move

He had the ball in both hands.

He stretches it out.

The top side of his right hand hits the ground.

The ball comes out of left hand but his right hand is still under the ball.

He pins it to his body with the right hand.

You can argue this until you’re blue in the face. The problem wasn’t the call. The problem is the stupid rule.

We’ve seen it over and over again.
