He clearly is not mullato

I've seen dark mulattos in my time, especially if his mother I assume, was 100% African. If his skin color is what you're taking issue with.

Same thing that popped into my head. If he was a slave, why does he have a turban on. Slaves weren't able to practice their own religion.
