A big reason NBA fans become player-centric is because singular forces can alter the league in ways they can't in football or baseball. For that reason, the NBA's eras (let's say 10-15 years at a time) come down to a handful of players dominating (Bird/Magic in the 80s, Jordan/Hakeem in the 90s, Kobe/Shaq/Duncan in the 00s, LeBron/Steph so far in the 10s).

Besides this New England run with Brady/Belichick, it's more of a revolving door in the NFL with who's on top; same with baseball. Those sports have worst to first happen on a regular basis. Every fan base can have hope. With the NBA, you know if your team doesn't find one of those transcendent stars, you likely have no shot.

There was a big difference with Bird and Magic though. In the midst of their popularity, the Cetics vs. Lakers rivalry was the bigger story during its heyday. They were great additions to it since their college rivalry as players fit perfectly into that team rivalry.

Man....that was such a UNIQUE spectacle.

All of that changed in the 90s when the NBA moved to NBC. The NBA didn't control how the game was advertised on CBS but had that control moving to NBC, removing the NBA from the NBC Sports umbrella and themselves having creative control. Then it became MJ vs. the world and how the league marketed the game changed.

NBA stans are something else...your comparing teams like NY, LA and other franchises who HAVE WON A TITLE vs a team who has been around since the 1930's who are WINNING THEIR FIRST SUPER BOWL IN TEAM HISTORY...its not comparable...fukkin think
so if that's all this thread is asking, basically is it any NBA team that can compare to a drought like that, the obvious answer is no. so what is the discussion even about?

Boston and LA were also the only two franchises in the league with any real history too (league was barely over 30 years old when those two got drafted). The Bulls had no history whatsoever before MJ and yeah, that changed the direction of NBA marketing.

If it happens with the NBA, it probably will take another 30 years or so like another poster said. The league itself is still really young in the national eye as far as popularity.

It's far and few between though.

Knicks fans go hard no matter how shytty the team is. And they've had fans handed down for generations. The NBA wave now is to celebrate players more than teams. I don't see how many can hand down team love or rivalries to their kids.

I get what you're saying Reb... but you know there is a racial component behind this as well.......

I c/s the poster saying black folks don't seem to idolize sports like that. Like I don't think I've ever encountered that whole "my grandfather and his father and my father....we will always be bears fans" bullshyt amongst black folks. Maybe it has to do with us being centered around urban centers and just having more shyt to align to/worry about. But those generational "this team means everything to my family" seems to hit more with blue collar/lower economic status whites who live further out or in rural communities or rust belt towns, places where aint shyt else to identify with or care about except sports.

shyt if the bulls win again I’m going to lose it,
My grandparents, my mom a little bit, me, my child, all Bulls fans, i think the older the team or more blue blood, will make a difference, plus the amount of years your team has been on a drought
