I think it's also important to recognize migrational movements. Even though family may have been born in certain cities doesn't mean their people were from there.
My Canadian branch was originally from Massachusetts, Delaware, DC, Virginia, Maryland and Kentucky.
My family from Central, Ohio were originally from Virginia.
My Great Grandfather's family from Centralia were originally from the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and New Orleans.
My Great Grandmother's who was born in Forrest City, her parents moved there from Tippah and Pontotoc, Mississippi.
There was alot of moving around with my family. I can't really say that anyone in my direct line had been in the same place for more than 3-4 generations.
Even for the enslaved side of my family from Southern Mississippi and the Florida Parishes, even the white families that owned them had not been in those areas for long but came to the "frontier" from the Carolinas. Literally the same families from the Carolinas moved together and settled in Lower Mississippi and Upper Louisiana after the Revolution. So lots of moving around.
