DBZ is really not the best anime story wise, character development wise. But it fathered like all the other good anime. So just off the strength of that its automatically GOAT status

Both are good in their own light. You can't really judge them the same because Yu Yu Hakusho was made for teenagers while DBZ was actually made for elementary school kids. DBZ was never meant to appeal to adults notice how there is little to no adult dialogue in it. Majin Buu eats candy for christ sake.

And YuYu was an inspiration by Dragonball/early DBZ.
Dbz is the father of all this shyt breh. Yuyu, Naruto, Bleach, One piece, etc.
And Soul Society was not the only good saga. Espada was pretty good too.
He eats candy made out of live humans.
He literally turned a fresh alive Krillin into a chocolate bar and chewed him to pieces on screen.

DBZ was the first anime I ever saw so it has that nostalgia factor at play. After viewing both, I would have to say YYH is better for a number of reasons but the most obvious one is that all the characters "level up", its not just the Goku & the saiyans show and Yusuke is a fukking goon. Its like dude is a piece of shyt that gains a heart as the story goes on, its 
. It just falls off hard with that last arc, shyt was corny 
but at least it had a respectable happy ending 
plus it got one of my favorite moments in anime
And honestly.. it would be harder to choose if you said Dragonball or YYH, because lowkey Dragonball was pretty dam good if you cut the filler and predictable shyt out.

Honestly DBZ is a classic but YYH is GOAT to me. I've watched it about 4 times. I'll never forget the first time I saw it, I was about 9 years old and was watching Adult Swim and it was the episode where Kurama, Yusuke and Kuwabara were stuck under that collapsing wall and they had to trust Hiei to run to the other side and flip the switch because he was the fastest one. 
It's a damn shame YYH never got the respect it deserves because it was always outshined by DBZ. It is GOAT to me. Great music, great characters, great fights, no filler, villains with a purpose other than I'm evil and I just want to blow shyt up. The story and characters in YYH are way superior to those in DBZ. DBZ was meant to end after Frieza and you can see because the story becomes rather mediocre after that and there isn't a lick of character development in DBZ aside from Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo.
Toonami taking YYH off the air during the Sensui arc and pushing it to the 5:30 AM slot on Saturdays was one of the most disgusting things I've seen. Seriously I fukking stumbled upon it on accident one morning, when I woke up. shyt had me fukking heated.
I had to set my alarm to wake up every Saturday morning to watch the shyt and this was back in 05/06 when I was about 11 so I hadn't realized that I could watch the shyt on the internet.
