Too lazy to post articles right this second but it looks like Israel will be going to new elections, anybody here good at Israeli political analysis?
Basically after the failed raid of Israel Maglan special forces into Gaza earlier this week that got an IDF soldier and about 8 Palestinians killed, Hamas pummeled S. Israel with rockets and Israel responded in kind. A truce was brokered that Netanyahu accepted which angered some of the Israelis near Gaza (Sderot, etc.) who protested and caused the hardline Defense Minister, Avigdor Lieberman to quit since he said signing a truce with Hamas was too soft a response.
Israel is a proportional representation parliamentary type government. Netanyahu's coalition had 68 out of 120 Knesset seats. Once Lieberman bolted he had about 61 left. That meant Naftali Bennett of Jewish Home, one of the most right wing parties in Israel that represents the Settler communities etc., asked to be Defense Minister and Netanyahu was like so Settler Home bolted and now he is below the majority. New elections haven't been called yet but even if they were, I have no idea how this vote would turn out. Likud will likely stay the biggest party (?) and Netanyahu has shown he can win pretty consistently (but getting more right leaning partners each time) but given the investigation and possible indictments against him it could be nuts.
Anybody know much on this?
