It will essentially be a cost analysis. How much is his contract worth? How much did they spend on him the first time around. That portion of his contract that was allotted for the budget of that project, mostly marketing expense . . how well did he sustain the buzz and how efficiently were they able to sustain that buzz for him? Is his buzz high-maintenance/high-cost or did he efficiently go about sustaining the buzz during his album cycle. Evaluate that. How much of that support will carry over to the next project. aka How many brand loyal consumers are attached to his brand (aka fans) after the album cycle is up. Then you'll see how much it'll cost to recreate that. If it's not worth it aka "it costs too much" . you put him back out there with less of a budget and you milk out the rest of his contract before you cut your losses. If he's doing well, then you reevaluate the value of the contract and begin to look at how beneficial expanding his contract would be for the label. Will he bring in more money with more support. Every artist has a threshold in which, once surpassed, you are spending more than they are capable of sustaining. A major label artist in the mainstream music industry's success is akin to the theory of trickle-down economics. Independent artists work in a reverse way as they aren't working to sustain a buzz, they are working to build a buzz.
