I think I read somewhere that the reason our gas is subsidized is because CrudeOil gets traded in $USD. That's what they call it the "Petro-dollar".

From my understanding, Russia or China was recently trying to change the Petro currency which would make gas more expensive here or something...

Just in the UK alone, ~65% of the price of a liter of gasoline is tax.

Europe is much more into public transportation than the US. People tend to either commute via public transit or small, fuel efficient cars. As far as I know, SUVs are mostly an American thing
