Maturin has officially been mentioned this season but they always had easter eggs in the remake films regarding turtles.

I haven't read the book (nor any other Stephen King book lol). I didn't get the turtle references either until I saw people discussing it online during the first few episodes of the show.

Also, the turtle references to Maturin are MEANT TO BE SUBTLE. I don't know if or when Maturin will be explicitly named/mentioned/shown, but the turtle references are there to be an undercurrent.

They won't but they should IT is literally his nemesis

I never watched the original IT and nor did I read the book.

I wasn't aware of the backstory behind Pennywise and always assumed it was an evil clown that came back from the dead

Knowing now that it's actually this otherworldly alien thing that has taken the form of a clown who wasn't originally evil is quite frankly a bit shyt

I've been delaying buying penguin in 4k but it's day one for the Derry physical release.

They are being protected by Maturin (a giant, cosmic turtle god). Maturin is basically the good version of It/Pennywise.

They have shown subtle turtle references and symbols throughout this season. The Natives buried the shards in turtle shells. Lily was given a turtle bracelet by Matty (and she says "turtles are lucky"). The mascot of Derry High is a turtle, etc.

Slight correction:
The guy in the turtle suit wasn't the Derry High School mascot. That was someone dressed up as "Bert the Turtle", which in real life was a film strip they used to show kids in the 1950's to tell them what to do in case of a nuclear attack
