They want the show to somewhat stand on its own. Thereās nothing wrong with adding something like the Air Force storyline. Itās how they wanted to explore the Bob Grey and territory lore.
I was iffy about them assigning new rules and lore to Pennywise, but theyāre going to have to learn the hard way that less was more when it came to making Pennywise, Derry, and its citizens actually creepy.
Theyāre still using the movies to explore the book regardless of the extra shyt and kind of unnecessary need to explain things. All the extra story needlessly explains to brand new casual viewers that theyāre going to continue to look into past cycles, without trying to replicate the losers club every season.
