it would cost no more than $300 to make a coli part 2 on xenforo software.

What's wrong with The Coli ?

It’s a relic platform. A platform that’s confined to a limited audience by design and will eventually fade. This site has basically been reduced to driving traffic from here to other media platforms every time someone embeds a link in their thread or post. Imagine if Facebook remain accessible to only Harvard students and alumni. It would be worth billions. Imagine if Instagram prevented new signups after a couple thousand. thecoli.com is basically MySpace in 2022. The members have adapted and in this small niche pocket while consuming other forms of social media more frequently.

thecoli.com is basically your parents home and you live in the basement. You don’t pay rent and you can come and go as you please. Some members eventually move out, get their own place and are out in the world. Some will come back home every now and then to check in. Some will visit once a day or a few times a week.

Others simply refuse to move out. Even when the parents stop taking care of the house (sohh) and move, people will still move with them.

As I said in another thread like this. This site and platform is too niche. Mom and pop. The design is stuck in 2003. The name isn’t catchy. The only thing that has kept this site going is the members.

this site has no brand or identity.

Do you just think brehs here are troglodytes? :what: Incapable of having other social media accounts? Maybe some of us see value in communing with other presumed black men. Or some of us just want to chop it up on a forum that, for all its glaring technical deficiencies, allows us to do so in peace. And yea I know this site isn't exclusively black, but it's the closest thing I've come across in years. There's value in boutique brands. Only 12 percent of the phone market uses an iPhone and we see how that's working out. Coli can cater to a "niche" audience and still bring in a good amount of ad revenue. It just comes down to how engaged that audience is. I agree the upgrades need to happen but you acting like the shyt shutting down is some forgone conclusion.

The community we have here is more close knit.

Yeah reddit has users and content, but I've never once had a meaningful conversation there.

Yea that too. Both a gift and curse. More so a good thing though. Always a breh here willing to talk regardless of how out of sync your ideas might be lmao. People bring up stuff like Discord but it's not the same, unless you're in a really small server. And even then the way it handles threads isn't ideal.

Update 4-27-22

From @Brooklynzson

What’s good bro, thats far too soon. The guy who is doing the update won't be available for another week or two. We still have to set up the test board and run tests and what not to prepare for the actual update.

The below is from me

Now leave me the fukk alone and stop making threads

I'm trying

:shaq:
Why dont he tell his own board about updates and shyt.:dahell:

Yeah but the time it takes to run a successful message board is what people don’t consider. A message board can’t be a part time hustle when people are posting 24/7. It’s a huge undertaking.

On a single VPS with 12-16 cores and 16GB of ram, you're looking at 150 to 300/month depending on the provider. You can do it with a lot less, but the hardware is there for spikes when shyt happens.

Most bulletin software is coded in PHP. PHP is CPU intensive while the database is more memory intensive than CPU intensive although it can be CPU intensive depending on the complexity of the queries.

You can "cheat" with a bunch of cheap $5 VPS running a PHP-FPM farm doing the work with Nginx or Apache sitting in the front spitting out the HTML, use micro-caching for the pages (1 second page cache times), and having the folder holding the bulletin shared on a clustered filesystem like GlusterFS. Run the database on separate VPS connected on a private IP. You won't need as much CPU power but enough RAM to hold the entire database, buffers, etc..
Great breakdown.

I hope they’re at least breaking even, if not caking, from the ad revenue.

reddit has more options for information.

this site is bogged down with bafoonery most of the time except for a small percentage of thread. Reddit is also a resource for info and networking. There isn’t any real networking here.

fukk the pop up adds tho. And the niche will eventually get stale. It is what it is. I’ve been rocking with sohh/coli for 20 years.

You could also look at it another way. This platform is vintage. A throwback and connection to the early 2000’s. Pre instagram. Pre smartphones. A relic site but in 2022.
