Death Row. It’d be an easy lick. Hardest part would be working with Dre’s flakey ass. My album would never see the light of day.

Diddy would have me doing all types of questionable shyt if I signed with Bad Boy

Death Row easily.

I’d take my advance and spread it out amongst Warren G, Daz. Quik and fly Primo and Easy Mo Bee out and make up some BS excuse why we “have” to record in Palm Desert just so we can avoid the nonsense at DR headquarters.

Wouldn’t even deal with Dre until it’s time to mix and truth be told, Quik can handle the mixing. Eventually PAC arrives and then I’d come back to LA and get him on a ton of tracks. All he wanted was the beats to be dope and ready and he’d get on it, so it would be easy to get him on board.

Then I’d stay in Suge’s good graces by figuring out a proper rollout for Rage, Nate Dogg and OFTB. I’d use my connections to Jewell, Michel’le and Danny Boy some studio work with established artists since it’s clear they weren’t getting albums out during the heyday of the label.

Jewell (and Nancy Fletcher) should’ve been trying to get placements with legacy acts like the Isleys, who caught a second wind in the mid 90s. From there, link with R Kelly and have him write for them. He would’ve respected their voices about to work With them. But out of Jewell’s own mouth she said a lot of their artists were living out of nice hotel’s on DR’s dime and spending $ they didn’t earn. They were lazy.

yeah signing with bad boy would basically be career suicide, youd be hot for a minute then suddenly be held back, your albums wouldnt come out and then youd end up on some show titled "whatever happened to..."

You say this as if Death Row artists fared any better. Snoop is the only Death Row artist with more than one successful album on that label. And even then Doggfather is generally considered not that good of an album. We could say Pac, but again, he was huge before signing to Death Row.

those aren't classics. They're old albums with a few good songs.

I lived through the entire era.

Had this conversation/scenario with a couple of my homies recently:

It’s 94-95 and you’re an underground rapper with a major buzz. Knowing everything we know now…who are you signing with?
I'm a wayyyy bigger fan of Death Row, but looking back, I'd probably sign with Bad Boy.

I'm gonna get robbed either way.

With Death Row:

You get robbed
You could get beaten up & or raped by Suge's booty goons
You could end up involved in gang activity that don't even concern you.
The C.E.O. is a psycho who keeps getting arrested

With Bad Boy:

You get robbed
You might end up in a shiny suit dancing around with Puff
You gotta stay out of California
The C.E.O. is an undercover psycho

I feel like I'm more likely to get killed on Death Row & assaulted on Death Row

Hopefully, I can just serve my time with Puff in a shiny suit and then leave he label & do my own thing.

BAd boy...by 94 Death Row was on a slow decline.

The hey day of DR was 1991-1993 with Dre's first album and Snoop's first. After that the quality of the music falls off.

BB was startin to bubble with Mary J and then Biggie... they didn't fall off for another 7-8 years after.

And Death Row in 1991 - 93 still put out better music than Bad Boy did

Truth.

The Death Row run is wildly overhyped due to the impact of a few albums that dropped in a couple years, but the run was mad short. Bad Boy had a much longer run. Suge killed Death Row and its potential after Dogg Food, with all his antics and nonsense he was doing to the artists and people that worked at the label.

Rage said that by '96, they didn't even have anyone working in the office anymore. So she couldn't get help with her album budget and A&R. She said everyone started going their separate ways. Pac was trying to get up outta there too. Once Dre bounced, the label died like a MF.

You wouldn’t sexually assaulted or raped in Bad Boy? :mjlol:

At this point, it’s cannon that Bad Boy was the more sexually deviant label. Death Row you have a larger risk of violence.
