...why NOT?

It's a shytLOAD of rappers getting TOTALLY undeserved credit for NOT having substance...so what the hell is the difference?

So wait....it's okay for people to proclaim "don't nobody wanna hear all that preachy bullshyt!" when speaking about someone like, say, Immortal Technique or whatever, but that same person is a fan of Future because the song "sets it off in the clubs"?

The selective hypocrisy is so RICH that it just HAS to be fattening. :stopitslime:

:what:

I'm not complaining about a rapper being preachy

What I'm saying is how does a rapper get placed on a higher level then another rapper for having substance?

First all there is no unified definition of what substance is and there is no agreement that all hip hop heads prefer their rapper to have whatever that substance is in thier lyrics

American Gangster was a conscious album? :heh:

It was literally The " I didn't get the role in the movie,so ima make an album about it" Jay-Z album

More like "I'm conscious of the fact nobody wants to see me act,so I'll just stick to rapping"

Jay doesn't really have shyt of substance...which is why he has to continually steal from other rappers and re invent himself.

Would somebody who's raps are so full of substance religiously trend hop in the manner he does?

Ur trying to connect things that has nothing to do with each other
Yes AG was inspired by the movie but doesnt take away from the fact the album has songs of substance like those I mentioned above
Tho...now I have to ask what u consider substance..

And hoppin on trends?? How does him hoppin on trends(if i give u that) somehow make his music lack substance

Re inventing yourself musically and in some cases poetically hardly has anything to do with how much substance ur music has

I mean like I alrdy laid out..Ya boy K dot calls the man THe GOAT of rap
And nikkaz like Soul calling RD they personal bibles

But he aint got no substance eh??:stopitslime:

it's not what you rap about...it's how you do it

I agree, but explain to me why certain rappers get props because they are talking about social ills and the black men plight while other get criticized for rapping about bytches and bottles?

What I'm saying is how does a rapper get placed on a higher level then another rapper for having substance?

I don't think it's that way ANYMORE....there was a time when it USED to be like that in rap, but intelligence is actually FROWNED UPON in this industry now. So I don't think fans do that anymore.

But just for the sake of argument....they PROBABLY do it because EVERY RAPPER OUT is already spitting shyt of non-substance, so when one comes along who's NOT doing that, people laud them for it.

And I used the word "preachy" because, to the layman rap fan, if you're trying to TEACH something or otherwise spit something other than materialistic bullshyt, they'll consider it preaching....these young dumb nikkas didn't think "Life Is Good" deserved AOTY consideration because they thought songs like "Daughters" held him back, "don't nobody want to hear that fatherly shyt..." (these were young people at our community center saying this, cats in their teens) :beli:

First all there is no unified definition of what substance is and there is no agreement that all hip hop heads prefer their rapper to have whatever that substance is in thier lyrics

...and nobody said there was. You're being defensive at this point.

But just like you said "there's no agreement that all hip-hop heads prefer their rapper to have whatever substance in their lyrics", there's EQUALLY no proof that all hip-hop heads want to hear the same "I'm in the club/I get bytches/I got money" rap that currently DOMINATES the airwaves.

You up here asking why should rappers with "substance" be lauded over those without substance.....IDEALLY, it shouldn't be one extreme OR the other, there should be BALANCE to where you laud both based on (hopefully) their creativity and prowess.

But there isn't. And that's the fault of the fans/"supporters" of the culture, for allowing this "enemy of my enemy is my friend" bullshyt to influence the culture so much.

Like I said....what you are really doing is a form of selective criticism.

When Jay tried to make an album of substance ( Kingdom Come)... that shyt was :scusthov:. dude literally came across as " I'm 37, i finally grew up so now i have to rap about grown up stuff now"

30 is the new 20..when the Camel was 37 :bryan:

The Maturation of Jay-Zizzy :scusthov:

Jay hops trends to attempt to maintain relevance.. it's like your 40 year old uncle, trying to keep up with 20 somethings... and in his mind he's :takedat: but in reality he's :flabbynsick:

any given Jay verse in the past 10-12 years= name drops his new friends, whatever expensive thing he just copped, stolen rhyme to pay homage, pop culture reference, new trend he's on and obligatory lies about his past.

All black at the white shows
White shoes at the black shows
Green card for the Cuban links
Y'all sit back and enjoy the light show
Nothing exceeds like the excess
Stoute got gout from having the best of the best
Is this what it's all about?
I'm at the restaurant with my rant
Disturbing the guests
Years of distress, tears on the dress
Try to hide her face with some makeup sex
This is truffle season
Tom Ford tuxedos for no reason
All saints for my angel
Alexander Wang too
Ass-tight Denim and some Dunks
I'll show you how to do this young!
No papers, catch vapors
Get high, out Vegas
Who says the devils ain't looking for trouble
You just got good genes so a nikka tryna cuff you
Tell your mother that I love her cause I love you
Tell your father we go farther as a couple
They ain't lose a daughter, got a son
I show you how to do this, hun!

:heh::russ::scusthov:

It all depends on what your definition of substance and conscious is.

Tracks like "Song Cry", "You Must Love Me", "D'Evils", "Beach Chair", "Minority Report", "Regrets", "Renegade" and "A Week Ago" show he has alot more than just bragadocious raps to his catalog. He knows how to get inside his own psyche better than 90% of rappers. I'd prefer that than someone kicking half assed knowledge on the state of the nation and the economy.

In the words of the GOAT "Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it"

This is an inconvenient truth. Jay is sometimes kicking knowledge though. Reasonable Doubt isn't "conscious" but there is some actual content/commentary in songs like "Can I Live", "D'Evils" and "Dead Presidents II" not to mention songs like "Song Cry", "Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)" and "Meet The Parents".
