It’s a special type of resentment that builds in you when your own family is against you.

Y’all know my story by now Engineer trying pursue music

Lost my job a while back but luckily I got hired by the military & don’t start until a few months from now

But during the process of my unemployment my parents kept constantly telling me to quit music I’ll never make it. I think it was a few weeks ago when my mom said some shyt that pushed over the edge. Her words “If you were any good you would be famous by now”

But we all know this industry doesn’t respect talent just money and clout and some of you heard my shyt and can attest I’m not trash.

Lowkey had me thinking I think I’m halfway done with my family. Cause at this point they just pissing me off
Been there....my parents were actually the worse parents any artist could have.

My mama sat and bytched and bytched bytched about me "destroying" her house as I was painting to finish up my Senior Exhibition. Mind you at the time I was poised to have the 1st Solo Senior Exhibition at Bowie State University in over 20 yrs.

Don't you know that woman had the nerve to show up to my event tryna soak up my praise? After all that batching and complaining and damaging my works she actually showed up to receive Matriarchal accolades.

Fast forward I'm in a permanent museum collection and I sold to an NFL Heavyweight who has over 4 pieces of my work in his collection.

I say all of this to say...fukk EM.

AND WHEN YOU ON TOP....YOU BEST STILL SAY fukk EM!

Don't forgive...and don't forget...fukk THEM

Came in here ready for a actual heartbreaking story. That was light breh :hhh:

If you quantify that as your family being against you, you need a reality check
Man I’m not about to spill my whole life story on the coli I can go wayyy deeper I’m Just tryna keep it short
OP..

I'm not gonna try to claim that I know your family, but plz, understand that your Moms was trying to be honest and upfront with you about your situation despite the abrasive and condescending tone/delivery of her opinion about your musical talent.

Sometimes, some mother's and other family members don't think about the feelings of their kids, especially their sons. But, I will say that if you feel you may need to fall back for awhile then I understand and do that..

I had to do that a lil with my father. Not mad at him, but a lil disappointed about the last 📱 convo we had. It's hard to have a convo with people who poses restrictions and limitations on what can be discussed as well as how it can be discussed.

In a nutshell, can't have convos, with people who still look @ you as a child/teen as opposed to a grown ass man. Inflexible people are hard to deal with, but not impossible.

So, yeah, do what you feel is best for your peace of mind. That's what I am doing..

*shrugs*
I feel you, thats why I’ve honestly stopped discussing my life with them
Rubbing shoulders with big names means nothing, they’re already surrounded by people like you trying to get a break.

Why you wouldn’t get your engineering degree, make good money then you produce your own shyt?
- I already have my degree and 5 yrs of working experience must have misread me

- again 6 disagrees of separation, sure it’s a competition but so is everything else in life. And all it takes is 1 solid break for your life to turn
If you're truly independent and not begging your family for money or support how would that conversation even come up?
They must see evidence that the music commitment is negatively impacting other aspects of your life (or it's geniunely trash and they just sick of you injecting it into yall relationship)
They old boomers in they 60s they think you have to dedicate your life to company and that a college degree is the ONLY way you can make it in life plus projection they couldn’t achieve what they wanted to do with their life so they think I won’t to. My dads a real artists he’s created sculptures, paintings, and carpentry but he never figured out a way to monetize his skills and thinks I won’t be able to too. The just started really buggin when I got laid off but a 9-5 ain’t the end all be all

What job you gonna do in the military?
Civilian engineer
Hoo, there are two sides to this and both sting like vinegar on an open cut.

1) For some people seeing you change/chase your dreams makes them feel resentment at the fact they didn't as well as reminding them about the life they live (which most never designed or picked).

2) They see you simply dont have the talent because if you did you'd already have made it because that true bonafide star power, charisma, swag, skills - call it what you wish - announces its presence early on and dominates your existence.

Basically, some people are haters. Others delusional. In the middle there is that slim percent that have earth shaking potential (and know it) but are hemmed in by the incarnational aspects of satan himself. Coal and diamonds, like I said elsewhen.

If you truly got the skills drop something and see what happens, perfect is the enemy of acceptable as that is all it takes. Check:

I know it’s kills them becauss my moms been in the medical field all her life and that’s all she’s know but my fathers a real creative but he didn’t know how to take it to the next level

But there is a STRONG sentiment amongst my family that we do possess some type of generational curse and they not wrong I can feel it too.
Before I was able to post on here I heard some beat you did with a Japanese instrument and some other stuff as well. It was fire.

This creative shyt can be a tough road, mostly because it takes most of our own blood, sweat and tears. The average person is used to following a linear path to regular employment. Music mostly isn't that unless you have some connections or musical family from a young age.

You have the engineering gig, so that's making you money. But the real passion is the art. Keep doing what you're doing but don't hold a resentment of them for it. They truly just don't understand.
Aye goods looks breh :salute: at least people here won’t know I’m lying. The latter is the best I can do just keep my distance

Breh, its almost like I pushed the pen on this for you:

"Take the elder, for example. The old man was a whizz when it came to sketching comics and caricatures because in an instant he could whip up a stylized image of whoever you said and his party trick was drawing a perfect circle with closed eyelids.

The entire bloodline was saturated with right brained creative inspiration that was constantly hemmed in to left brain expectations as logic murdered intuition, generation after generation".

I think you'll like it as it may just speak your language as this is way more common than you think. Parents who live lives they hate and want to make their children as miserable (ie "safe") as them. Its wild when you've seen it happen for generations as I said.

Honestly I looked at anybody pursuing a music career as a joke. It's SO MANY folks out there pursuing music, always talking about their passion this and that. One of my guys back in college was pursing music, ain't heard from him since.:unimpressed:

I don't blame your parents. Me personally, I'd have told you good luck and it's your life.:hubie:

OP, in response to your response back to me..

I hear ya man! Do what you gotta do! I definitely understand how you feel because to some degree, I feel the same way.

I guess in my situation, both my parents have health issues, so I feel that they earned some latitude from me on things. I don't want no issues with either of them, so I will stay in my lane and play my position. Its just with my pops, I conclude they we will never be close. The disconnect is real so it is what it is.

Alot of y afamiky will be jealous of you instead of seeing the greatness in you and invest in you. Trust me. Ya parents jealous of you man.

For some strange reason the Negro world doesn't value artists and musicians like they should. Idk what it is but Black folk have a disdain towards the arts. They would rather invest in you for sports and education. But music, art, theatre and dance? Naw it takes a special Black parent to be conscious enough to see how much money you can generate if you nurture these skills in its infancy.

There is a reason why Picasso is considered a GOAT. His father basically taught him to paint and exposed him and fed his artistry.

It really doesn't matter if they or Coli or anyone else thinks you're good. If that's what you've chosen, then take it seriously and put the work in. Study your craft, go back to the beginnings of it and learn it all, from then until now.

That way even if any naysayer is right and your ear completely sucks, you'll have such a level of technical mastery that you can still make a way for yourself no matter what.

I don’t hold nothing against strangers breh i get it but people have even told my parents I’m talented not saying I’m the best of the best or the most gifted but I’m VERY versatile. I’m not a one trick pony you can’t box me in.

Which is insane because imo they all go hand in hand. Once you have technical mastery over ANYTHING that’s when the REAL creativity starts

I always joke with people I'm a frustrated entertainer underneath it all, but after a bout of being homeless I think the 9 to 5 is the route for me.

It's your life OP just live it and don't worry what others think, even if it's family.
You're not going to make it in this life if you get concerned about people shytting on your dreams.

I fund myself no help from anyone. I Lowkey spent close to a hundred thousand already but that’s just on building myself up, getting the right equipment, networking and events etc. I haven’t missed out on anything career wise, except when I got laid off. I’m 28 currently but I started taking it seriously and putting in money when I was 25. I have no real obligations. No wife or kids I’m single.

Getting my engineering degree was the toughest thing I had to do in my life with no help from them, they can’t offer me anything I can’t already do for myself

6 degrees separation, I’ve already been able to put myself into position and rub shoulders with some big names. I just need the right guidance to help make sure I’m not going the wrong way
You don’t need guidance.

If music truly is your passion, your innermost desire, then guidance is not what you need. You just need to get your work in front of the right people.

Work made through that natural passion - is of the divine and as such, easily identified by those specialized in talent recognition.

At the same time, don’t be reckless with your spending. Your family is looking out for you. Cause if you ruin yourself it’ll weigh too heavily on them. Emotionally. And most likely financially as well. Take their advice and tuck it away. Follow your intuition. It’ll guide you to the source of that sound of water that is beckoning.

@GrindtooFilthy you gon be OK breh. Just do like I do...find you a King to research that is close to you and use him as your metaphor.

I chose Hannibal of Carthage. Reason being is that Hannibal had a blood feud with the Roman's. The art world is ran by white people and thus is remnants of Roman art and ideology so it makes sense to choose Hannibal...and the Alps is me getting in NY or the plight to move past being an emerging artist. It keeps me motivated to grind hard and keep attacking.

They being real with you tbh. You most likely won’t make it. They want you to be realistic about shyt. Pursue your dream but be realistic about it too and have fall back plan if that don’t work.
