Pete's problem seems to be he can't even get a competing offer for the Mets to match, therefore everyone is just guessing what he's worth and each side doesn't agree.
This getting to this stage means Pete is gone. Other teams are definitely not going to give him a solid offer until like spring training now hoping the Mets are too far along Plan B to care to match.
Also, I think on the low the Mets want to use this year to reset the luxury tax breaking the streak they been doing the last couple. The penalties get more severe the more consecutive years you are over the highest tax threshold.
