Use a compass for direction.
Not sure you have to use GPS but you can check whether GPS is correct. Walk 1km check GPS. Drive 100 km check GPS. Sail speed+compass - check GPS.
Not sure how GPS can mess up your measurement without you being aware of it as long as you check as you go along.
You could fly in a straight line and known heading as well.
We are talking about an order of magnitude difference as you approach latitudes NEAR Antarctica.
