The gunman who fired the first shots at the Danzig mass shooting has been sentenced as an adult to life in prison with no parole eligibility for seven years.

Folorunso Owusu was 17 at the time of the July 2012 shooting and could not be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He is now 21 and, after being sentenced as an adult, his name can now be published.

He shook his head and turned to look at his mother, as Justice Ian Nordheimer read his decision.

It’s not fair,” his mother said. After Nordheimer left the court, she gestured to the judge’s dais. “You are not the hammer, you are not God.”

Owusu fired a gun at the Danzig party organizer Nahom “Gifted” Tsegazab during a confrontation, hitting him and a young woman, Nordheimer said.
