You cant be a part of ownership and play at the same time, though. I dont think Brady is stupid enough to think that you can simply retire yourself into free agency.
He was probably hoping the Buccaneers would commit to another high price quarterback and then once he returned, they couldn't afford him cap wise. That's kind of what happened with Marshawn Lynch when he retired from Seattle then came back to the Raiders. Or what Brett Favre did if I recall correctly, he retired and then the Jets traded up for Mark Sanchez and couldn't reasonably keep both Favre and Sanchez so Brett Favre ended up going to Minnesota.
