Obama to police: Dallas shooting was a 'hate crime'

President Barack Obama on Monday described the Dallas shooting as a "hate crime" against police, according to a top law enforcement representative in the meeting with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

“One really striking thing the president said in his opening remarks was that the shooting in Dallas in many ways was strikingly parallel to the Dylann Roof shooting in Charleston in the sense that it was a hate crime,” said Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, in an interview with POLITICO.

During the nearly two-hour session, Obama told Pasco and seven other police association officials that if Micah Johnson were still alive, he would have been prosecuted for a hate crime, “which is quite a precedent from our standpoint,” Pasco said. Hate crime prosecutions are seen as a recognition that victims were targeted because of their race, religion, or some other characteristic, and they can carry greater penalties
.

Pasco, who has been critical of the administration’s tone toward police, said he “very much” appreciated the remark.

“At the end of the meeting I asked him to reiterate that publicly,” Pasco said.

The meeting, which included groups representing both rank-and-file officers and chiefs, was originally planned by Biden, but Obama, who cut his trip to Spain short after five police officers were fatally shot in Dallas, decided to join at the last minute on Monday. Obama will be joined by Biden and former President George W. Bush on Tuesday, when he speaks at a memorial service for the slain officers.

On Wednesday, he’ll gather law enforcement officials and policing reform activists to discuss ways to jumpstart the reforms outlined by a White House task force last year. Some officers have perceived Obama as siding with movements like Black Lives Matter over the police, especially in the wake of high-profile police-involved shootings like those in Minnesota and Louisiana last week.

“The president and vice president wanted to hear directly from law enforcement officials about their ideas on best practices for building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve,” said the White House in a readout of Monday’s gathering.

The statement said they discussed implementing the task force reforms, as well as “ways to support officer training in safely deescalating confrontations and systems to ensure the safety and wellness of those who protect all of us. The president recognized the importance of their continued partnership and emphasized his commitment to finding solutions to enhance public safety and reduce tensions between officers and the communities they serve.”

White House Counsel Neil Eggleston and Domestic Policy Council director Cecelia Munoz also attended, according to the White House.

Pasco said Obama expressed openness to looking into the new restrictions on local law enforcement’s use of military surplus gear, like armored vehicles and grenade launchers. According the Pasco, the ballistic helmet that saved an Orlando officer during the Pulse nightclub attack is one of the restricted items, and others have legitimate uses for local police, Pasco said.

While there’s still skepticism about Obama’s support for police, Pasco said, Biden is the “lynchpin” who brings law enforcement and the administration together. Pasco, for example, said he’s known Biden since the 1980s, long before they worked together on the crime bill in the mid-1990s.

“We trust him,” Pasco said of Biden.

According to the White House, Biden committed to reconvening the officers, as well as community leaders, for “ongoing consultation.”

Funny how that cop killer Larry Gordon hasnt yet been reprimanded or talked about by the #alllivesmatter and #blueslivesmatter supporters

Notice how they only have something to say when black people wanna talk about their unfair treatment in Amerikkka. But we all know that their hashtags are code for anti black. :mjpls:

1) IGNORANT WHITES WILL NEVER LIKE YOU NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They killed Jesus and MLK. There's nothing Obama could do to make whites who already hate blacks like them. Blacks in general need to let white appeasement efforts go. The white people that will judge you based on your merits, cool, the rest, f*ck 'em.

2) F*ck the next term, this is an issue we can do something about NOW. TODAY. There's only one side, the side of justice. How the f*ck is there even an option if you care for your country and your people? :mindblown:

How old are you, if I may ask? We're 7 years into his presidency and you seem to just be figuring this stuff out.

Being a black president fukks you both ways unless you find a way to appease both groups without offending both groups because it can't seem as if you're coming off as showing favoritism, for lack of a better word.

And then you have to think about there not only being white and black people in the country as many people are oft to forget. And then there's outside business.

shyt's not really all that black and white, breh.

You say blacks need to let white appeasement go but Obama doesn't really have that luxury, as that's literally his job.

This is the problem I have with a lot of these idiots .....If you want to criticise him on the economy, on Syria etc.... then its fair game thats his responsibility

why bother having a Governor, mayor , councilmen If you expect the president to address local issues .....

doesnt make sense.....

This year, I voted for my council member and got my old mayor lol.

The last two political terms, with Obama included, is the EXACT reason why I refuse to support this farce of a political system. At least with Bush everyone knew he was a fukkup and they do what they do, fukk shyt up. However, Obama played A LOT of people, as politicians do. But its more excruciating when its one of our own, that we put faith in, that does this. And although it wasn't totally his fault, having a republican congress that only cares about there agenda and wont compromise will reduce any president's power, he definitely didn't at least feign enough support of black trials and tribulations within the system.

I remember telling my uncle before the 2008 election year that maybe it wasn't a good idea to vote for Obama because of how bad the previous presidency was and the near impossibility of Obama righting the ship, forcing him and all black men to be seen in a negative light (surprise, surprise!!). My uncle lashed out like I had never seen, going on about how my great grandmother had to call a child ma'am and other shyt I long forgot. He emotionally bullied me into voting for Obama and his 'CHANGE' rhetoric out of respect for 1920s black america and beyond.

But not this year.

Its clear that most people just don't get how politics is working us over repeatedly. And as much as it may hurt my grandmother and others in my family, I aint voting for shyt this year.

I'm going to focus on changing my legal status.
I'll focus on becoming a natural person.
I'll focus on learning more about Law AND History and how its being applied in today's America.
I'll focus on climbing the ladder in my career.
I'll focus on acquiring at least one skill that's not related to my career, just in case.

And I'll focus on my own personal growth to become the best man I can be, so that my future family can depend on at least 1 'black' man to support them.

Also, if nikkas were really mad at Obama, they would petition to get rid of his smilie on this site. It ain't like we need it anyway, and he don't deserve it!

Money talks, bullshyt walks. I think there was a big misunderstanding here. People assumed that because he was black, he was above the influence of money. He isn't. He's pushed legislation that helps gay people and has outrightly said that it helps the LGBT community. He's pushed for legislation that helps hispanic people and he's outrightly said the legislation will help hispanic people. What legislation has he pushed for black people while outrightly saying that he's going to help us? not minorities but black people specifically? I'm not sure.

So the question is: Does he care more about LGBT issues and Latin issues and womens issues?
The answer is of course: NO.

The reason he's ridden so hard for them, is because they have helped him win elections by putting that paper together. They had different organizations and groups dedicated to their rights and they pooled money together and pushed to have him elected. 2 times. Can I get some stats on how much money black organizations pooled together and donated to have him elected?

And to people who are heated over him ignoring us but then going to memorials for white police officers: Are you actually surprised?? they are government employees, just like him. They're both sustained by taxpayer money. He's in a similar category, do you not think he'll value their lives above your own? He's going to push to increase their funding, but he's not going to push to make them more accountable. Why should he? he's instantly recognizable and he's rich, AND he's protecting them so he never has to worry about them pulling him over and pumping some shots into his chest. As far as he's concerned, he's not just another ngga, he now has privilege. Why should he ride for us?

On the other hand, If he really is trying to help us, he's being weak on purpose. He's not pushing hard when it comes to black issues on purpose, because he knows that if he's remembered as the 'black' president--that president that did all of those things for black people, then another black president will never be elected. He knows this. He wants to be the first, but not the last. He wants to say to collective white america "a black presidency is not a threat to white supremacy" with the hope they'll believe it and vote in another black president, who will then say "nah. A black presidency IS a threat to white supremacy, and it needs to be. White supremacy needs to go. America is a multiracial nation and has been from the beginning. We need to stop pretending that this is just a white country and our laws must reflect that everyone truly IS equal"

People are still stuck on that line about "we need to elect more local black politicians and police".

  • the Black District Attorney of Brooklyn run on a reformist platform only to stab his constituents in the back by recommending no jail time for that Chinese cop that killed the brother in the stairwell.
  • The Baltimore Mayor, and Baltimore Police Chief presiding over the disaster that was Baltimore. The State's Attorney herself completely bungled the prosecution and has been involved in some shadiness in prior cases. Research the case of Keith Davis Jr.
  • Kasim Reed, current Mayor of Atlanta not only once, but twice pulled the "MLK wouldn't have blocked the freeway" card.
  • The Mayor of Denver did this victim blaming bullshyt,
  • The Milwaukee County Sheriff and his unapologetic white supremacist attitudes towards black people.
  • The numerous lower-level black cops with white supremacist views posting viral videos since the Black Lives Matter movement kicked off
  • The black politicians in congress voting to reauthorize these national security bills which give these damn departments all that robocop shyt.
  • The black politician that represents Baton Rouge(Democrat) in the Louisiana senate that fukking voted for that "Blue Lives Matter" Bill. Baton Rouge has had a Black Mayor for a long time now.

Seriously, y'all? How will more of the same people work out this time around?

Dallas, Texas but living in Houston, Texas
hes not supposed to be on the ground in all honesty... that is why you vote in a governor, mayor and have a police chief ....

Obama can be criticised for many things but that is not one of them....

too many of you on this forum are politically illiterate ...... If you were you would realise that who you vote for in local elections would have more impact on your day to day life than who you vote for president....

obama has spoken on race more than dammed near any other president, and he has been criticised for it relentlessly....

dammed if you do , dammed If you dont......

No matter what our personal feelings are its his responsibility not to up the ante lame duck or not....

smh at people acting as If police murdering brothers is something recent
That's what I've been trying to tell people. Your city council, sheriff, judges, mayors, school board, state senators/rep, governor, etc has more power and influence on your daily lives than the President of the United States.

Some of yall bugging. And def mad. Putting so much stock into Obama.

What difference would it make if he was this great black power president coming to all the tragic sites and speaking out 24/7.

Yall overrate the fukk out of the president role. They are nothing more than puppets. Not always a bad thing but they dont have as much power as you think.

America still gonna be fukked up, still gonna be racists cacs.
