From a narrative standpoint, he was a character waiting for something to twist him. Glad to see that his evolution has happened fully, and piffly

Wolverine was severely downgraded for me, when we learned what his past really was, and Hugh Jackman's voice replaced the OG animated voice when I read Wolverine lines

Cyclops was that dude until editorial mandate forced the writers to have him leave his wife and kid and found x-factor. (Circa1986) He got his shine back after the Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon stories though (since 2001 or so)

He gets a lot of flak for being stuffy, but I wouldn't be either if I had to live every day knowing that I could kill anyone just by literally looking at them the wrong way. Plus, you need a character like him to keep everyone on task. Everyone on the team can't like Wolverine or Gambit. They'd get everybody killed, lol

Edit: wolverine works a lot better as a side character who occasionally gets the spotlight every once in awhile. They demystified him by revealing every detail of his life, shoehorning him into every superteam in comics, and treating him like the center of the universe in the movies and cartoons. Not to mention upping his regenerative powers to Piccolo levels.

For the past 20 years Scott has been more interesting than Wolverine.

Pretty much since Onslaught Cyclops has been holding it down for the mutants as both Xavier and Magneto were off the board. Look at it this way. The X-Men don't even NEED Xavier anymore and Magneto follows Scott. Think about that.
