My issue with The Last of Us' following is that many people don't even understand it. Anyone who thinks Joel is some kind of good guy or everyman is a fukking idiot - and it plays into why the bar is so fukking low in Western aimed games. The shyt is dumbed down on purpose. Make shyt easy for the writers, the marketing, and the players. Fear of failure.

The plot is easy to understand. I think people made it more complicated than it had to be because of the M. Knight "twist". It's a throwback to old school FF storytelling. A priestess needs to fulfill summoning rituals in order to save the world from the evil nightmare monster.
Auron is a protection spirit specifically summoned for that reason.
You were told while playing the game that spirits would come and be attracted/guided to the priestess' presence. Each character had an individual background and subplot (ala FF VII) that all coincided with the main plot and had purpose.
The begining was simply showing your the circumstances surrounding Tidus' death. You just didn't know he was dead at the time. Tidus' spirit was in limbo but he was able to be called back based on the destiny of the Priestess.

Joel was down for the same dirt everyone else was - with the same twisted rationalization that put him and everyone that wasn't a cannibal on roughly the same level. Joel is not a good guy. He's just the main character.
I don't think there's anything "wrong" with Japanese writing aside from some cultural differences.
I will say that the ridiculous fanservicey scenarios, horriawful female characters, an obsession with teenage angst, being "the chosen one" and the overuse of "amnesia" NEED to go. Western games have shytty tropes too, but this is a Japanese thing that's gotten tired
