james had one big song, which was famous for one line, had only been rapping for a year, and got blackballed from NY radio for saying shyt they didnt like. Thug is way past that point, and has way more support in the game.

i think the problem is that a lot of modern hip hop is judged on completely different standards than it used to be even 5 years ago, and it can be hard to conceive that a lot of these rappers are just trying to make different shyt for the feel of it. It's not meant to sound like Mobb Deep or Jay Electronica or BDK

You don't even realize it but you are judging him by the wrong standards just bc of this comment. Young Thug fans are not trying to focus on his lyrics, that's not what his music is about. But you're used to lyricism being prominent so you're trying to put that on him. But he is more focused with fitting the feel of a track artistically than spitting a hard verse. And that's what they like him for. Like you said, the beats are already decent. He just tries to compliment the beat in a way no other MC does.
