Any posters here go to or went to a IVY league school? How are you treated there and what's the African American community like? I'm planning on studying Computer Science at Duke, UPenn, Cornell, etc. However, I can wait till grad school for a school that has a strong program but a wack social scene. The people I've talked to have told me that Duke and UPenn have the balance that I'm looking for. Some people told me to avoid Cornell and many others. I live on the East Coast and I'm trying to stay relatively close to New York. For the past four years I've been the only black dude in my classes filled with snobby Jewish and white kids, I don't want to go to college that's always like that. Any advice brehs?

I went to a state school in Miami but I just want to follow this. I would recommend Duke because North Carolina has many educated black people not necessarily at Duke but others you may be hard pressed.

Like @andre patton bka big boi mentions Duke isn't an Ivy League but it is competitive. For computer science you choose Stanford, MIT or Cornell.

Yeah, I know Duke isn't technically a Ivy league. I still treat it like one. I'll definitely PM you though.

I'm trying to stay on the East Coast so I can't go to Stanford. How's Cornell's social scene, do you go there? A lot of the people I go to class with are heading there. These are the same people I'm actually trying to avoid. I visited MIT and I liked it but, I think I would I like to study there when I'm older.

I went to a state school in Miami for economics. However, i read on schools. As far as social sciences it is Harvard, Yale or Princeton.

they call themselves an "ivy of the south" just like stanford calls itself "ivy of the west" but its not an ivy. if you go around in college educated circles talking about you go to an ivy league school then say duke they're gonna look at you like :what: then :usure: then

remember the ivy league was created as a sports league, not necessarily for elite education purposes. there are better schools that arent in the ivy league (like Stanford) and mediocre schools in the ivy league (like Cornell).

schools from best to worst in the ivy league (my opinion only): Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Cornell. Studying CS at any of those schools will give you a top tier education, though. as for the black experience I can only really comment on the one I went to. The african-american community is highly intellectual at all of them, as expected. The schools try very hard to be diversified. Manage your expectations, though. Going to a school in a big city will be better than one in the boonies, as a black person. But I wouldnt be too hung up on it either way. You'll find your friends, you'll have a good time, you wont experience much overt racism (remember these are all educated people) but most of the white kids come from rich white neighborhoods so they really dont know many black people wherever they came from. Lots of kids from NYC though too, who do.

Just go to the best school you can, get your degree, then live your life with a good job and good connections :blessed:

Thank you for the advice. I just don't want my college experience to be lame. I'll try to stop worrying about the people I meet at these places. You're probably right, I'll be fine.
