Props to him.

And I am not saying this as a way to hate on him or me thinking because no one I know listens to him that somehow this isn't true. Numbers don't lie. Just saying I honestly don't know people way into his music. It must be the younger kids and Im just being a Larry?
It's high school kids and college-aged people. Also people who listened to him in college that are still loyal. But this 2x platinum with streams. Don't ever forget that. That's the new game. Drop the project to enormous hype and then tour it so you keep your buzz up and people are still buying it but even more are still streaming it. He also released a live tour version of the album.

At some point, Beyonce will probably pass Drake in physical sales for their albums but she'll never catch up because her album is ONLY streaming on TIDAL. His is everywhere + radio singles. That's the new game.

Cole did these numbers because he dropped in late 2014 when everyone was talking about how wack hip hop was that year. Everyone copped his shyt off principle, but only the biggest diehards still play it. Most admit that it was not even better than Born Sinner.

He did that much because of radio play. rocnation has a good contract with radio stations so he gets insane play on there (just like rihanna). wet dreamz got played multiple times the hour for months and it didn't even really do numbers on the charts like that (peak was 61 on hot 100 and 12 on urban). radio play isn't guaranteed sales, but it helps sell albums in the long run when sales usually start to slow down.

it's funny because j.cole fans act like he's an unsigned underground artists when he got a huge push from the label to go platinum.

it also helps that he directly appeals to young college aged black women, which is the most loyal fanbase of all.

he isn't a bad dude and his music is decent, but people overrate him because of his sales. when people are going to look back at this era, it's going to be Drake and Kendrick who will be remembered as the greats, J.Cole will be a footnote.
