I'm a fan of Cole's but let's call a spade a spade. Drakes journey into mediocrity and fraudulence was Kickstarted by Cole's very own mediocrity and pretentiousness. He didn't have anyone to push him. We like to paint Cole as this intellectual, and all that, but truth is it took him damn near 3 albums to even find his lane. All the while Drake's lack of competition went straight to his head. Wasn't until Kendrick came along that someone of his era could make him rethink his music, direction, and place in the game. Someone who could surpass his critical acclaim and do (similar, but still less) numbers that opened his eyes. When you really think about it. That control verse was the first time someone of Drake's era (not older guys) had really stolen some shine from him and shut shyt down. Which is why he was so emotional about it.

J.Cole's failure to be great early on, doomed Drake into mediocrity and his massive ego.

If Cole was dropping classics that matched the whole "he's the next Nas" thing so many people tried to push, I have no doubt in my mind that Drake would have been better as well. No need to be great when the field ain't great either.

He was supposed to be the Bird to Drakes magic, just somebody who could match him. And it never happened.

We gone look back on this whole Drake/Cole/Kendrick era with disappointment.

Only one of them really brought it.

Two different lanes imo....we all know drake can write a better pop song but who got more bars :leostare:
I didn't say he wasn't a better rapper. He is. And a better artist (not before, but present day knowing everything we know) I'm saying when Drake was running amuck in the game destroying every feature and every song. Let's say from Summer 09' to that Stay Schemin verse, who the hell was his competition from his era? Who was pushing him? Who was reminding him like "Yo I'm here and you gotta be great." Nobody.

No he don't. And I'm not in the crowd that thinks Cole is some lyrical savant, but I can't give him that knowing what we know. I will say tho, before the Exposal, I might have definitely given it to Drake as far as punchlines and wit, but to Cole with story telling and delivery.

Maybe, but the Warm Up came out in Summer 09. Cole didn't drop his (decent but not great or classic) debut until September 2011 and that was overshadowed by Take Care, which was a better project.

Drake was working, Cole? I don't know man.

You gotta come harder than that is all I'm saying

I really liked Cole first album he's also underrated for producing the majority of his tracks..while Drake got a whole ovo sweatshop.
