I realized why I don't enjoy J. Cole as much as I used to. He doesn't say anything that I haven't already discussed with someone else. So it becomes a matter of do I enjoy the music? And his production isn't strong enough to make me do that. No. ID your mentor and you need to go back for more lessons.
I made this exact point earlier in this thread

He also doesn’t discuss anything we haven’t heard him discuss/complain about before

Every rapper has their pocket of context that they talk about so a majority of time and what makes it new and fresh is the music surrounding it

One of the most mindboggling moments in hiphop for me this weekend Ive never been this confused
I dunno some folks think it's a lot better than it is while others are severely underrating it imo. I don't think it's nowhere near as bad but with more spins. The thing is I don't think this Cole album would bring back folks who already have an idea of what they think of his music and him as an artist.

I wouldn't call any songs wack, but I could see folks saying some of the production feels samey.

What do you think about Nas albums? Has he ever discussed things you haven't discussed are his post-millennium instrumentals John Blaze? :jbhmm:
You can't listen to love songs unless the production is The Chronic, because you've discussed love? Excluding like 95% of RnB and soul.
I'm not known for being a Cole-fan on here and I'm not like CrimsonTider who floods every thread with his signature "i'm a huge stan but let me shyt on everything harder than the haters". I say that to say this, I though the production was solid but with a few peaks and a few lows. As far as emceeing goes, lyricism is about how you say something not what you say. That's why these soul singers can have a whole discography about the same topic. I also think most of these topics are wide and complex enough for you to be able to hit details that are unique to you. Just him talking about white people is fundamentally different from me doing it cause he was raised by one. Or Pac talking about the love of his mother, is unique to how Pac talks about his mother, and how he does it even more so.

I really don't have this problem, particularly, I have surely not discussed his mother alcoholism, how his relationship with money has evolved, his take on the dynamics of substance abuse (which everyone has a different opinion on) or how anyone deals with poisonous relationships or his evolving experience with fame and much more.

But IMO he should still try to do like Kanye and Dr. Dre has done, both legendary producers that can do it on their own. But they work with cats to make the best possible music, inspiration and still head the direction, make parts of the beats and on. But then again he goes gold first week of his fanbase, no singles or social media needed. It must be hard to convince someone like that to do anything.

Because in TDE, Top Dawg and Punch has the final say. So even though Kendrick has creative freedom, he still have to the thumbs up approval. Even when and how it'll be released.
I believe so damn firmly that at this point he's got the full trust from them guys, and even if not I don't see that being how TDE works, doubt an album like Ab-Soul's Do What Thou Wilt would be allowed to drop if that was the case

They not distributed by Roc Nation. J. Cole is part of Roc Nation. Roc Nation handles the promotion, the marketing, the tours and so forth. And that is that. Dreamville is it's own imprint with Interscope.

Before you come correcting me, why not do your homework.

Exclusive: J. Cole Talks Partnership With Interscope Records
I didn't read all that guy. I said that J. Cole's projects (as in Cole himself not Bas and them) are still distributed through Roc Nation, and only now does he own the masters to his most recent albums (4YEO and KOD). It is literally right on the back of the album. "Dreamville Inc., Under exclusive license to Roc Nation Records." All you do is google articles and you have no understanding of the business. I made this point to you years ago and you're still repeating it. I never said Dreamville is via Roc Nation, I said they renegotiated with him after the Columbia deal was over because he still owed them albums. The Columbia deal ended with FHD. Since then, J. Cole albums have been through Dreamville i.e. he has his masters but still distributed through Roc Nation. It is the same deal they gave Rihanna, the Lox and T.I.
