Most people say he's one of the greatest. And I'm like, how? :yeshrug:

He could do every style while still being cohesive, had some of the nastiest drum programming in hip-hop history (breh literally would do 128!!!! bar long sequences, contrasted with, for example, Dr Dre's constant use of one bar loops). Dilla's drums were so great and had so much swing to them that they actually influenced actual drummers (Questlove, Riggins, etc) to change up how they played. Beyond that, his flip game was fantastic, his could work the boards and scratch his shyt up, he was great on the mic, and he was a fantastic bass arranger (most of the time just programming it right thru the pads on the mpc).

He could even play a multitude of instruments. Madlib said he has an unreleased jazz album. This is live instrumentation, played by him, with horns by Dwele iirc:

The people who claim he is/one of the greatest know what they are talking about. That includes guys like Madlib, Pete Rock, Kanye, DJ Spinna, RZA, Premier, all who know more of the above than me. Pete Rock redid the entire Petestrumentals album after hearing Welcome to Detroit.

Guys like TEKBEATZ can vouch for this. When your sitting there trying to chop up a record, he's one of the first guys that floats into your head as inspiration. I could sit here and post some of his flips for hours, but look at what he did with this. He took the bit from here at 2:52 thru 2:57

and flipped that shyt into this:

This kind of shyt is mindblowing, from a production standpoint. It's why people think he's a GOAT.
