Looking at that tracklist is a slight buzzkill after the Versuz high. A lot of forgettable songs on there. I don't even remember how half of the album sounds.

I was listening to some of the tracks last night and man there were some mediocre and flat out bad tracks on there. That album really was “here’s my street tracks, here’s my female tracks, here’s my west coast influenced tracks, can’t forget to show love to the south tracks”

Like others in here said, the album was a let down because leading up to it, it was Kiss really contending for the crown. Yea, Jay went at Mobb Deep and Nas at Summer Jam that year but truth be told, Summer of 01 Nas and Mobb weren't really a factor like that. It was all about Kiss and Jay. A lot of people don't mention this but at that same Summer Jam, I remember Eve bringing out The Lox and they performed We Gonna Make It for the first time when it was only a few weeks old. And let me tell you, they received the 2nd largest pop of the night outside of Jay's infamous Summer Jam Screen performance. Knock Yourself Out and We Gonna Make It were arguably the 2 hottest songs of the summer out here. Also you had the best of Jadakiss mixtape (I forget who put it out) floating around leading up to the album. The stars were aligned for Kiss but the debut left everyone feeling underwhelm with some of the songs. Imo, Kiss Of Death was a way better effort.

Completely agree. I have fairly fresh ears during this album over the years, and in real time it was underwhelming, and now it’s pretty much meh. I wouldn’t give this album past a 6.5/10, and it probably wasn’t much higher back then. Even looking at the track list right now with the credits, I’m getting disappointed all over again :pachaha:that’s why despite LOX absolutely crushing Dipset in that Verzuz, people shouldn’t be revising history like they have.

LOX still don’t have a group album that comes close to the first Diplomatic Immunity. Jada doesn’t have a solo better than Come Home With Me or Purple Haze, and possibly even From Me To U, though Kiss Of Death may come close, but even that’s a pretty bloated album. Styles has unbelievable consistency and I’d put Gangster and A Gentleman & Time Is Money as top tier LOX releases. Sheek undeservingly gets slander, but he has some cool under the radar albums himself, especially After Taxes. There probably needs to a deep dive into all these releases, cause I could go all day lol.

At the end of the day Dipset had collectively better material, better singles and certainly more cultural impact. At a point in time when NYC was being shut out in the mid 00s nation wide The Dips were welcomed in various regions

We Are The Streets is a tri state classic
Gangsta & Gentleman their best release
Clearly put on a great show
Kiss is a legend

Exactly, (apparently lol) you had to be there to understand the context.

I feel like this is one of those typical big budget late 90s/early 00s albums that is super bloated with some gems but lots of misses. You need hoes to buy your shyt but that doesn't mean "throw every ladies track you recorded on the album." The result is an uneven album with some super high highs (We Gonna Make It, None Of Yall Better, Show Discipline, etc) with some super lows. Feels like you got something for the streets, something for the ladies, shyt for the west coast. Ehh...
Absolutely. Life After Death is the best "checklist album" IMO. A lot of people tried to do it after that, and I think Jay was the only artist to consistently nail those type of albums afterwards.
