 There was some white kid in my middle school who said his parents was letting him doing that and he wasn't gonna be going on to high school like the rest of us. Thought it was weird and backwards as fukk, no idea it was that common

In my city, parents do this all time for their sons who play football. They call

themselves holding them back so they "growth spurt" kicks in.

It's so dumb, especially if they kid don't grow any.

:heh:

It's actually not that dumb. Around that age a year makes a BIG difference. I know my birthday was late and had I waited a year I would have had that much more of an advantage when I played. Im glad the opportunity never presented itself to me though.

Thats a bad example LeBron's birthday is December 30. Some school districts you have to be the age before the school year starts.

First time I found out shyt like this was happening was my senior year of HS. I played football and was talking to my then QB who was a sophmore and he asked me when my bday was and I told him it was in December and he was like :dwillhuh: why didnt you stay back a year? And I was just :ohhh:. He told me his parents did that with him when he was in either middle and/or elementary I cant remember.

There was also a controversy with this dude that went to my high school that ended up transferring to some high school in DC. Dude stayed back so many times (unintentionally he was just a dumbass and hardhead early on in high school) that he was like 20 as a junior in high school and the school district wasnt trying to let him play. The school/community had toget petitions and shyt signed and protested and they finally let him play.

Also if you break it down it can be more than just one year. My birthday is late and I entered college at 17, Shabazz Muhammed is one month older than me, yet he started school last year...that's a BIG difference.

My bday in December and I was 17 when I graduated. Took off school for a year and still started college at age 18 but that was in the DMV.

So yeah I figured it out on my own looking NCAA basketball and seeing starting age for freshmen/ sophomore who were kinda or older than normal.

this shyt goes on a lot... I grew up in MN, land of hockey and parents hold their kids back a year usually in kindergarten... So when they get older they'll have a size and physical development advantage over other kids...

TYRONE GA!
Not shocking. It used to be just for kids whose birthdays are late and don't meet the school year cutoff, but too many think their kids will be ath-a-leets.

didnt know this was "news". Knew a kid who was supposed to be in our class my freshman year and who repeated 8th grade. Never reclassified though. Ended up on Duke as a walk on for a year though...
also pretty common for dudes to play a 5th year at a prep school for various reasons... don't see the difference really...
