Jamaica has been rife with crime so I understand the country’s desire to want to change the narrative being broadcasted by media and stop perpetuating negative messaging.

However, considering the level of inactivity from the government as Jamaica has been declining over the past couple of years, I do find this disingenuous. Censorship isn’t going to fix the rising poverty or unemployment (two major factors that are directly proportional to violent crime) and most music is consumed via the internet/streaming so most kids (who this is supposed to target) aren’t going to be affected by this anyway.

Streaming platforms can block people from certain regions from consuming their product. There are plenty videos, for example, right now that people in the US can't watch on YouTube, a vpn can get around this limitation but the extra barriers in place is a win.

This ban is only covering radio stations though. Children and teenagers, by in large, aren’t listening to the radio anymore and for content restrictions to occur on streaming platforms, that would require agreements from those platforms as well.

Complete restriction isn’t feasible and we need be honest and tell parents to monitor their kids more. It’s really not that hard to have your streaming platforms set up to have parental blocks on so it’s a lazy excuse to solely blame music, in my opinion. We need to be active participants in the raising of our kids.
