Bob Marley as a brand and image is so much bigger than James and Bob’s music. You have 15 year old kids that have probably heard one Bob Marley song in their life wearing clothes with his face on it. As far as international facial and name recognition, Bob is bigger.

But if we are only considering their music, James cast a far larger shadow. He is not only one of the major pillars of Funk,
Soul, and R&B, he was also a large influence on Rock, Pop, and various other music genres. He also was the biggest influence on Michael Jackson, the most successful music act of all time.

People outside of the 2 or 3 generations around the time of James Brown do not know who James Brown is. I have been in a non English speaking country and said i'm from Jamaica and the first thing they say is "oh Bob Marley". I understand he is Jamaicas biggest export but all corners of the globe know his name.

In terms of musical influence its a toss up. Bob Marley popularised a whole genre of music and brought it world wide to ppl who don't even know a thing about Jamaica, but James Brown is much more sampled in modern American music. But if you don't know its a James Brown sample, you will never know. His music was powerful in its time, but I don't know if it still holds the same weight and if its still played outside of the home in the same way. Whereas Bob Marley's music is a universal music of resistance, struggle, protest and peace

But one genre of music being reggae still has a large cult following from non western people generations down the line because of Bob and they can still trace it back to him. He is one of the main tourist attractions to the island even for people who were born after he died.

I'm gonna say Bob on this one. He had a greater influence worldwide than James Brown both musically and culturally. Ask a Gen Z who James Brown is they probably cant tell you, but they know who Bob Marley is. Even if they think its just for smoking weed.

It was already a thread on this one a few months ago.

Marley is a global icon and revolutionized Reggae and helped to bring about the rebirth and resurgence of Rastafarianism, made the highest form of Black hair unapologetically beautiful and defiant to the masses (locs or dreads), and definitely lived up to his “Champion of the Third World” moniker.

James on the other hand is one of the greatest musicians to have ever walked the Earth dead or alive. If it wasn’t for this man, we would never have Hip Hop, Disco, House music, Contemporary R&B, possibly Funk music, and possibly Rock n Roll...Most of all, we would have never been blessed with the GOAT music artist and entertainer in existence :mj:

Just like the previous thread, I’m still going with the Soul Brotha No. 1 :wow:

I'm just going to quote @Samori Toure on the last thread ya'll did on here debating this shyt.
Even Bob Marley was greatly influenced by Curtis Mayfield. One of Marley's biggest songs was "One Love" which was an interpretation (a rework) of Mayfield's song "People Get Ready." In fact Mayfield was given a co-writing credit on "One Love", because Marley had not initiallly acknowledged Mayfield's copyright.

Meaning of "One Love" by Bob Marley - Song Meanings and Facts
One Love/People Get Ready - Wikipedia

Another influence of Marley was James Brown.

Bob is more popular, while james is just more impactful in music, with how he and his band helped shape music.
