People outside of the 2 or 3 generations around the time of James Brown do not know who James Brown is. I have been in a non English speaking country and said i'm from Jamaica and the first thing they say is "oh Bob Marley". I understand he is Jamaicas biggest export but all corners of the globe know his name.

In terms of musical influence its a toss up. Bob Marley popularised a whole genre of music and brought it world wide to ppl who don't even know a thing about Jamaica, but James Brown is much more sampled in modern American music. But if you don't know its a James Brown sample, you will never know. His music was powerful in its time, but I don't know if it still holds the same weight and if its still played outside of the home in the same way. Whereas Bob Marley's music is a universal music of resistance, struggle, protest and peace

But one genre of music being reggae still has a large cult following from non western people generations down the line because of Bob and they can still trace it back to him. He is one of the main tourist attractions to the island even for people who were born after he died.

I'm gonna say Bob on this one. He had a greater influence worldwide than James Brown both musically and culturally. Ask a Gen Z who James Brown is they probably cant tell you, but they know who Bob Marley is. Even if they think its just for smoking weed.

James Brown has bigger influence but Bob Marley is more famous than James and his estate has created a brand that Dwarfs most musicians. His estate made $20 million last year and has regularly been in the top 5-10 for highest earnings of deceased artist since his death.

Mofos actually choosing Bob Marley?:what:

Influenced by James Brown

The real story with Brown is the way in which he revolutionized music, influencing just about every strain of pop music that would follow. He influenced musicians like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Public Enemy, among others. According to the man himself, "Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I'm saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me." While this may sound more than a bit egotistical, it's hard to say he's wrong. Brown not only directly helped create the genres of soul, funk, and modern R&B, he indirectly influenced an even wider range of artists, encouraging musicians to follow the rhythm and the groove rather than simply adhering to typical musical conventions and structure. Brown's music was sampled by innumerable hip-hop producers and DJs throughout the 1980s and 1990s, helping establish rap as a viable musical form. Even techno is indebted to James Brown. As a testament to his wide-ranging impact on modern pop music, Rolling Stone named Brown #7 on their list of the Most Influential Artists of All Time. And even the academics are getting into the act; recently Princeton University devoted an entire conference to the study of James Brown. Now that's a lecture we could definitely sit through.

James is the father of modern music.

James Brown and it's not even close.

Bob Marley has become oversaturated (overrated) like 2Pac after his death. Unlike Pac...Marley wasn't popular in America until long after his death when his image started being marketed as some sort of “humanitarian/hippie peacemaker”.

James Brown has shaped numerous genres, artists and has been sampled thousands of times...James Brown is a staple in American music.
