It's well past the point where you can wave around his win/loss record. He's not a good coach and his teams are regularly outmatched when playing similar competition levels. And it's clear the team simply gave up this year the minute they realized it wouldn't be a cake walk back to the playoffs. Oregon loss was predictable for the reasons mentioned...he wasn't going to get fired over that. But to lose to a god awful UCLA team and then have zero passion against a meh team yesterday? Nah.

I'm sure he'll go somewhere with less expectations and a big NIL bag, where he'll win 8-10 games a year and fail to win any big games or conference titles.

None of that matters. Look at all the upsets that happen. He does not win big games. Penn State should have been in the National Championship last year. Franklin coaches scared too.

when those big games are against oregon, ohio state, notre dame and michigan again teams who are better

Guys drafted to the NFL

Shocking Penn state is losing to teams who ARE BETTER. No coach is going to change that its not about the x's and o's it's bout the jimmies and the joe's

so a coach who had 3 straight double digit win seasons and went to the playoffs last year cant have a down season?

bo pelini was 67-27 when nebraska fired him, no coach since has a record better than .500

Context matters. Those double digit wins are routinely against the middle to bottom of the Big Ten, and occasionally a halfway decent non conference opponent early in the season. Going to the playoffs last year means nothing when you're this bad this year.

And the problems with this team are consistent issues that are bigger than just this year. They consistently can't recruit wide receivers that are legitimate threats. The defense should've upgraded with hiring Jim Knowles, and appears to have taken a step back, suggesting it's both a talent issues, and massively overpaying for a DC, which is also a decision Franklin would've influenced or made himself.

All the signs are that the team has peaked under Franklin at least for now, and was about to slide into a down period, whether it's extended or temporary. And with the Big Ten having just expanded, this really isn't the time to be a middle of the road team. Oregon really just walked in and took their spot as the third team that you should expect to be a title contender each year, and he seemed completely unprepared to effectively fight back. Sucks, but if you're a school that thinks you should be a title contender each year, what Franklin was giving them just wasn't good enough.
