"The Kick" is 38 years old today
This lead to Maeda leaving New Japan (again) and re-forming UWF on his own, taking Takada with him. Which lead to the first Tokyo Dome show and later the creation of RINGS and UWF(i) and shoot style explode.
Mid to late 80's New Japan fukkery changed the biz in so many ways
The thing with HoT live reaction is that it's coming from a dwindling audience so it's really weird they keep pushing a niche act that hurts business more than helps it, no matter how "over" they are on live shows. The counter argument would be that the company would be doing just as lousy without them plus they wouldn't have a "popular" act like HoT...but to me, putting the effort and time they've spent on that stable into things that can make the company grow would lead to better business automatically
Wolf's debut is pretty important so EVIL better redeem himself for all the boring shyt he's put fans through all these years by making the guy stand out. If Wolf really is Gable Stevenson 2.0, then he's gonna need all the help he can get.

I wonder if its because its so “different” that Japanese fans love HOT/Evil so much
I guess so. It's a little confusing. Most Japanese online reactions aren't different to ours. They hating on EVIL and HoT shenanigans.
But the people who actually goes to shows doesn't seem to mind. And we had a full Korakuen today, so, at least it seems people are more open to these kinds of gimmicky shows.
