Wha jay really saying is if irv gotti and dame dash such big business minds and all da records and labels only happened because of them. And if they need money and broke why don't thwy go head a big studio for sum loot instead of selling masters or not paying child support.

He shouldn’t sell them. He’s not just a businessman he’s a BUSINESS man and those Masters will generate hefty generational wealth for him and his family for decades to come.

He’s probably got a top 5 most valuable Hip Hop discography of all time.

I remember when Nas was going through his divorce with Kelis and she was airing out all of his finances and business dealings that the public didn’t know about it and it came out that he makes 140K a MONTH in publishing residuals, now imagine what Jay-Z makes, and thats just PUBLISHING. Owning the Masters i’m pretty sure doubles that amount. Add in he can tour for the rest of his life. He can do documentaries on the making of Vol.1, Vol.2, The Blueprint, and American Gangster. He can clear samples & interpolations, he can put out “15-20-25-30 year” reissues of his classics. Selling would be absolutely retarded.

Hell I don’t blame Dame for not selling his portion of the RD Masters back to Jay. I’n sure he makes a pretty penny off all the sample clearances, interpolations, and licensing that comes along with it.

What people have to remember is that music is a WORLDWIDE business. Just because you may not hear Can’t Stop The Hustle or Feelin It in American commercials and movies, doesn’t mean their not being licensed in France or Germany or South Korea.

Jay-Z is not Future or The Dream. His catalogue actually MEANS something to the culture and will always be valuable. Hell I was shocked that RZA sold his Masters because Wu-Tang is one of the biggest worldwide BRANDS in music history, not just rap. I woulda thought RZA would be eating off that catalogue forever
To be fair Rza only sold half.

And of course they can make a killing of keeping it, but with a lump sum amount like that, they can probably make the same amount much more quickly with less work, investing it CORRECTLY

I think many of these artist just dont want the hassle of liscensing music to movies or someshyt, clearing thier music, etc. so they sell the shyt for a massive amount and let a publishing company or label handle it.

How much do you think RZA got for making that move?

I'm old enough to remember when Prince signed the megadeal with the record label.
And how it all went left.
Prince just hit Warner brothers for another 100 million
before he died.
My post was how younger artist would
ask Prince to colab and would be pissed
after he'd tell them to call him after they
own their masters.

Agreed. One thing people are also glancing over are how much royalties are actually being made. I remember seeing Mariah brings in 2-3m a year for her Christmas song. Bieber sold his catalogue for 200m. In his situation I believe he made the right decision.

What are the chances he’s going to have a hit that iconic? Who knows how long that’ll take? It’s a huge gamble. 200m now or wait and see. I know what I’m doing.

Hov got multiple businesses outside of his music grossing him an over a billion, he doesn’t have to cash out.
:russ:

Other major artist aren’t as successful in other ventures so cashing out was probably the better option for them.
