I would even argue that starting from 2007-2008 through 2012 that Nas has put out better albums than Jay-Z.

They typically dropped around the same time as each other throughout the years. Let's tally up the head to head:

Illmatic>RD
IWW>Vol 1
I Am>Vol 2
Vol 3>Nastradamus
Dynasty album>Bravehearts (compilations around the same time)
Stillmatic>Blueprint
SD>BP2 (since we're comparing their double albums)
Gods Son>Black Album
HHID>BP3
Untitled & LIG>>>>>>>>>>>>all other subsequent forgettable garbage Jay dropped

I got it 9-2 in favor of Nas through 11 rounds.

Close thread.

Jay Z the rapper, discography hands down the best and deepest ever.

Most people do not separate it from Jay Z the man so it affects how he is judged by certain people.

I don't have a top just some faves and i am fan of records.

My faves are Jay Z, Em and Fab.

Its about the discography because who live show would you see first, second, third, etc..

These lists are impossible in Hip Hop, Basketball, film, whatever.

The criteria varies too much.

Plus, we now have fans of the culture who were birthed in it during the
20th Century. We are now ion the second decade of the 21st Century.

It is difficult to convince those who were raised on LL, Melle Mel, Kane, Blastmaster
KRS-One, Rakim, and Chuck D that Pac, Jay and Nas are superior to them. And that
doubt exists in reverse.

I do find it interesting that devotees of the pioneers tend to strongly value Nas, Big and Em
over Jay though.

I have:

Illmatic > RD
IWW > Vol 1
I Am > Vol 2
Vol 3 > Nastradamus
Dynasty > Bravehearts
The Blueprint > Stillmatic ( surprised you prefer Stillmatic but to each his own )
Blueprint 2 > Street's Disciple
The Black Album > God's Son
The Blueprint 3 > Hip-Hop Is Dead
Life Is Good > Magna Carta Holy Grail > Untitled

7-4 in favor of Jay-Z

precise versatility, because to me nas and pac through the course of their career have proven to be more versatile than jay

Pac yes, Nas no, which is why I have him one spot ahead.

jay's best album was like throwing a dagger in the water. nas or biggies best albums were like a tsunami wave, changing the way albums would be done in the future

If we going off how dynamic debut albums are then where are we ranking Snoop?

:mjlol:

My objective criteria looks something like this for an all time (not favorites) list:

- Skill set
- Versitlity
- Impact
- Influence
- Longevity
- Body of work

According to that I got Jay and Nas at 4 and 5 respectively. He's easily one of the most well rounded artists to ever grab a mic.

Unlike Jay z, BIG was arguably the best rapper when he was alive.

At no point in Jay`s 20+ career can you say he was the best rapper alive.

People tryna knock BIG`s discography when those albums laid the foundation for what a commercial album is supposed to look like. Two masterpieces.

Dropped arguably the greatest double disc album of all time.

Jay z was citing BIG`s rhymes not the other way around.

Get the fukk outta here @ the bold

:mjlol:

Acknowledging that it's not very extensive doesn't mean somebody is knocking his discography. And honestly without Jay Z citing his rhymes Biggie's legacy wouldn't look the same. He'd still be revered but compare him to Pac who had enough material before and after death to extend his shelf life on his own.

:ehh:

I can hear you on some of those, but no way is MCHG>Untitled, nor BP2>SD.

SD def has some weak points on disc 2, but you could chisel that track list down and come out with a solid 4 mic album. BP2 you can't do that. The fact that Jay redid "Me and My Girlfriend" as his lead single and made it about and featured Beyoncé is damn near sacrelige, he should have been slapped for that. I lost a ton of respect for Jay as an artist for that. Pac hated him, it's like pissing on his grave.

But respect your opinion.

Quality>>>>quantity

Biggie's didn't need Jay z to spit his rhymes. Talking about he wouldn't look the same when he went his last album sold like 10 million copies and his influence don't stop to just jay z. His catalogue is obviously extensive enough if he got the record sales and influences to prove it.

Let you tell it, if it wasn't for jay z Biggie's legacy would've been irrelevant.

His last album came out in 96 nikka....I'm not saying his legacy would be irrelevant but Jay did indeed extend his shelf life. Pac didn't need a cheerleader or spokesman, he had enough material to do that on his own, Biggie did not.

Biggie didn't need Jay to do anything. That's the point.

He already had the admiration of hip hop fans and people within the hip hop industry in general.

Hence the record sales and influence in hip hop music.

Biggie's last album came out in 97 not 96 BTW

More of his records are good compared to Nas. This isn't debatable. Neither is whether Jay is in the Top 5.
Of course its debatable.
Nas only has 10 albums. Mind going through and telling me which ones were hot or a disappointment? Most having him batting 500 at best.
Nas albums that were disappointing?
I Am
Nastradamus
SD (I actually really like SD, but to be fair)
HHID

I'm not counting the album with Marley.

These albums are "hot" to me:
Illmatic
IWW
Stillmatic
Lost Tapes
Gods Son
Untitled
LIG

I'm most on the fence about Untitled :yeshrug:

You know how long it took for him to fall off with beat selection?
One album. Vol 1 had disappointing beats
"BP3" still had fire beats, along with most of "MCHG",
:hhh:
Each album excluding maybe 2, all had very consistent, high quality production if you're arguing your point on music.
Albums with inconsistent production
Vol 1
Vol 2
Vol 3
Dynasty
BP 2
KG
BP3
MCHG
f you meant his emceeing and songwriting, that's harder to substantiate.
He declined after RD, he never came close to reaching those Olympian Heights. Jay on RD is as good as any rapper ever.
Jay on Vol 1 wasn't even close, but still very dope.
If he didn't make anymore music after TBA, he would be revered much higher than y'all are undermining him atm.
I'm not undermining him. I've got him somewhere between #6-9.
On "I Am" he tried rapping fast in one instance, on "Nostradamus" he tried being some "spiritual lyrical miracle" type rapper and remaking "It Was Written". The worst part was that nikka dropped those 2 :trash::scust: IN ONE YEAR. DMX and Hov pulled it off, but NOT NAS!?!?!?
Yeah - tough time to be a Nas fan :mjcry:
"God's Son" was great, but it wasn't a return to form like he demonstrated on "Stillmatic".
Agreed - it was still a great album, but not a classic like Stillmatic.
Then you have "Hip-Hop Is Dead", which was Nas trying to be "Real Rap", like given all this nikka did for trend hopping,
You really want to bring up trend hopping? :russ:
When "Life Is Good" came out after that b*stardized creation that was "Street's Disciple", how is that not the textbook example of inconsistency in Rap?
Life is Good came out nearly a decade after SD
SD, HHID, Untitled, Marley album, LIG
