Let's talk about J. Cole at the end of that song though, god damn dude crushed it

And could I be a star
Does fame in this game have to change who you are?
Or could I be the same one who came from a far away life
Just to make it in these Broadway lights?
Now shining in the broad day light, go figure
A slow transition from a little broke nikka from the Ville
Got a deal, a real life saver
Dreams of being behind the wheel like Jada
I chill now...cop a little ice later
Cole you got the glow like a lil' lightsaber
So clap for him, then applaud Hov
He gave him a platform
Flow so sick thought he wrote the rap for him
No sir
The flow's cold as the shoulders
Of gold digging hoes when a broke nikka approaches
Told ya I’m focused man
I’ll let you motherfukkers soak it in

Cole got Jay on this...classic verse

That track basically summed up Jay in a nutshell. The Triple H of Rap constantly inherently putting himself over. Insecure with a over the top ego at the same damn time:sas2:

Jay grabs the sledgehammer aka threw that track out burying everybody and nobody says nothing.

:ohhh:

triple h is corporate most of time but he still wrestles every once in awhile

Jay is corporate most of the time but he puts a verse or track out every once in awhile

both they're marriages were power moves, that got them where they are now (they work in the same fields as they're wives too)

very good comparison

First of all, I'm not reaching at all. If it were one or two questionable lines, I could see your point. But given the fact damn near every single line in the song can be viewed as a slight to another MC and Jay Z's legendary penchant for subliminals, I don't understand how you can surmise that he's not being slick on this song.

Secondly, I don't hate, dislike, or have any ill will towards Jay Z. I even stated that I think the song is genius. He has truly mastered the art of the subtle diss, which takes much more skill than blatantly and overtly throwing shots at someone.

Third, and most importantly, I'm not out of line. I think the issue is, that you may lack the ability, or may be unwilling to see the jabs that Jay threw at the industry in this song. Given the fact that this should be considered a low level interpretation, in terms of comprehension, which is due to the non complexity of the verses, I'm leaning toward the latter.
There's a couple of things at play here...

1. It's really difficult to give that many rappers props on 1 song, even in 2 full verses. So things can be taken as slights even if they're compliments. How can you really sum up a great rapper's achievements in 1 or 2 bars?

2. The last verse is an ode to himself, which changes the way the song is viewed. He gives them props in order to big himself up for surviving that all and thriving for so long. It's a smart way of making yourself look great. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's what rappers do. Kanye wrapped subliminal disses in a dedication song too. But if it didn't have that verse, then the other verses would be viewed as more positive. Imagine his last verse being about the next potential stars out there and how they can be great, because all these greats made it. That would change a lot of the perception. That's why I think his verse on Welcome To The Jungle where he embodies other rappers is a higher compliment and greater achievement.

Those things said, I like the idea and the execution. When does a rapper of Jay's caliber spend 2 verses sending random shoutouts? J. Cole killed his verse, the beat, and the hook are great too.

I always felt the biggest Jay full of himself song was Dreams

So Biggie basically came back from the dead just to tell Jay-Z he was that nikka for 3 minutes. Didn't check on his family, ask about his Mom, his daughter, his other friends, he just came back to tell Jay he was the man and then went back to being dead.
Someone... I think @Walt... made an excellent thread about this

Line by line teardown analyzing the nerve of Jay. Indeed, the idea that Big would come back from the dead just to top Jay off was ridiculous. But Jay does it solely because he knows theres nobody in the game who can check him for it.

Jay is a rap super villain

It all goes back to being that insecure ugly dude

That's why people feel his pain and his agony

Did Jay ever go at a nikka cuz he borrowed a mic on his arm:comeon:?Put out a album called GOAT at a point where nikkas aint een fukk wit em no more:patrice:?

I dont see Jay being sneaky with his arrogance at all,I guess he toned it down but he also toned down his misogynist lyrics he was one of the goats at:banderas:....i think its obvious he thinks how lyrics will effect his money now before he says theim which i hate as a fan.

I love moments where the arrogant nikka he's always been comes out, those moments are rare now,but in his prime these lyrics aint shyt comparrd to stuff Jay used to say:laff:
