He should be recognized unanimously as the best one to do it. Objectively speaking any other opinion just doesnt make sense. Especially when you listen to the way this dude was spittin before he became popular, it becomes clear homie was on a different level.

this nikka was crazy:

flows
wordplay
multies and rhymes
punchlines
meaningfulness
beat selection

nobody did it better than Jay from a technical skill nor commercial standpoint.
the fact there are youngins out here that have never listened to Reasonable Doubt bothers me.

I consider him in my top three
Although I feel Andre 3000 is better than him, especially from a complete artist stand point too
But jay was a real visionary tho if I were to actually view him has the best it would be because he applied his hip hop success to his life better than practically any other MC. Sell drugs, use that as influence in music, 'move on from that use music to establish yourself as a business, take the business from your music, expand it, branch out and basically use buinsess like how you sold drugs, almost like starting from scratch. Very few rappers can flip hip hop how he did which is a very underrated skill to me

to me other rappers that ppl like to tout as the best ever like Pac, Nas and 3000 even...had things that they did extremely well but also had flaws or shortcomings in other areas. None of em were all around as good as Jay. Jay was truly the MJ of this rap shyt (Johnson, Jackson and Jordan...whoever you choose). He is flawless. The closest all around example was Biggie but he went too early.

In my Lifetime is a throwaway but a perfect example of what I'm talking about. All those things I listed in the first post were put on display. Jay was sinister on the mic :pachaha:

How is Jay-Z the most underrated rapper, when he's one of the most well known and acclaimed rappers of all time?

shyt doesn't add up:patrice:
you see how if somebody were to speak badly about Prince, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder musically they would be ostracized? The same should go for Jay but it doesnt. For that reason he is underrated. A lot of ppl dont know how great Jay really was between 1994-2003.

Yeah he also had some amazing endurance cause he would put out some less than stellar projects but would just keep going and make better projects too, he wasn't afraid to fail at all he really had a heart of stone to this rap shyt. Actually I don't think I've ever seen this nikka look weak at all either too

indeed. and honestly speaking...his lesser projects in my opinion trump a lot of rappers best projects.

shyt...there are people out there who think Hard Knock Life isn't a classic album ...and that it in fact sucked. Ha. Homie is underrated.

In my lifetime remix is one of my all-time favorite songs from Jigga (I know the original was posted by the OP).

how can some unknown underground rapper be underrated when he's highly rated by his 1000 or so fans and no one says he's wack
