He should be recognized unanimously as the best one to do it. Objectively speaking any other opinion just doesnt make sense. Especially when you listen to the way this dude was spittin before he became popular, it becomes clear homie was on a different level.

this nikka was crazy:

flows
wordplay
multies and rhymes
punchlines
meaningfulness
beat selection

nobody did it better than Jay from a technical skill nor commercial standpoint.
the fact there are youngins out here that have never listened to Reasonable Doubt bothers me.

He didn't get those props back then cause his competition and peers made better music. Biggie, Nas, Pac, Redman, Mobb Deep, OutKast, Wu etc etc

Rae and Ghost had the gangster shyt on lock as well as Mobb Deep.

Jay was able to emerge from the shadows of Big and Pac's deaths. Once they passed, he got on his grizzly and kept at it till he won the masses with Hard Knock Life. Jay kept his nose clean and stayed with his eyes on the prize (the money and his business); he consistently put out music every year and kept a catchy single in the clubs.

But in 96', he wasn't the nikka he would become in 98' (success wise) with Vol. 2 and then in 2001 with The Blueprint (equally successful and creative)

He is many things....

Underrated aint one of them.

Also its art, aint no undisputed. Hov is top 5 though and probably had the best overall career turnout all things considered, but everyone gotta different perspective on who's the best.

Nah

But people underrate him as a lyricist, always felt like that. Like they give that to Nas and dudes like that and just give Jayz the “best rapper” thing but Jayz is a lyricist through and through

Everything you said is exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title

Rapper and Lyricist are two different things bruh…at least how I gauge them. Title says is he an underrated Rapper. I’m saying nah…he’s an underrated Lyricist tho. There’s a lot of legendary GOATish Rappers that I don’t classify as real Lyricists like that…and vice versa
