I don't put a differentiation between book smart and street smart...If you're smart, you're smart. If you're well trained and well read, you're well trained and well read.
I'm a hood nikka who reads books. I think Hov is unimpressive but dope in his "light" way.
Dude dips his feet in the water of full out "killing it" too much for me.

"Book smart" as in people who are educated (and on paper should be able to dissect wordplay) but are not familiar with the references and/or the modality. I feel you though

A lot of people ARE familiar with the references and modality, they just hear better versions of it from doper artists.
Mafioso rap is NOT easy to relate to...and most street nikkas were not suppliers.
Mad nikkas just wanna live through Hov's stories. He gives 'em hope. When I wanna hear that shyt, I'll listen to Trae or Beanie Siegel. I don't wanna hear that old man bragging.

I feel the same way about Jay's music, he's still slicker with wordplay than Trae though bruh.

And I never said Mafioso rap was relatable, real or any of that. I said that the aesthetic of his lyrics has stopped a lot of people from picking up on the wordplay.

Ergo, some people are quick to hold Talib Kweli up as an example of lyricism but turn around and shyt on Jay-Z... which in reality is ass-backwards. They're just not familiar enough with the modality to see the craft in Jay-Z's lyrics.

"Money makes the world go around so I made some to spend(spin)"
:banderas:
Always got the spin part but for some reason I was being brain dead and never connected that he was saying he made money to spend and keep the world spinning so he keeps making money to spend to spin.

not read through this thread but im pretty sure this award goes to Nas... not taking anything away from jay-z as he still has good albums and songs but plenty more rappers more creative / clever than jay too... :yeshrug::usure::camby:

:mjlol: Nas is over-hyped as a lyricist & ain't even close to being on Jay Z's level.
