Jay Z Wades Into Trayvon Martin Controversy; Shock Over Blatant Racism
Nearly two weeks after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, stars are continuing to jump into the heated debate.
Hip-hop mogul Jay Z is the latest to weigh in, telling the Life + Times website that he didn’t sleep for two days after the July 13 verdict. "I was really angry about it. We all still knew it was still a bit of racism in America but to be so blatant?"
The rapper - who is currently on tour with Justin Timberlake - mourned the jury's decision which failed to hold Zimmerman responsible for the killing. "If you ask yourself the question, Didn't Trayvon have a right to stand his ground? He was being chased. He fought back. He may have won. That doesn't mean he was a criminal."
Jay accused Zimmerman of being unprofessional and racially profiling Martin. "This guy is not a professional," Jay said. "Professionals are taught not to profile. … This guy is a novice. This guy is a f—king mall cop."
Last Saturday, Jay Z and wife Beyoncé joined Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton in New York for a demonstration against Stand Your Ground laws.
